Hulu’s continuation of Scrubs is working hard to recreate the feel of the original show, and the latest episode did that by bringing back a familiar face. Whether you consider it a tenth season or a true revival, the show’s return to Sacred Heart is resonating with viewers. A big reason for this success is the return of the original stars, including Zach Braff as J.D., Donald Faison as Turk, and Sarah Chalke as Elliot.
While Judy Reyes’ Carla and John C. McGinley’s Dr. Cox appear less in the Scrubs revival because of other work commitments, they still make an impact. Recently, a beloved character from the original series returned in Episode 6, “My V.I.P.”: Rowdy, J.D. and Turk’s taxidermied Golden Retriever. Though just a stuffed animal, Rowdy was a memorable part of the show and symbolized their friendship. He’s now displayed in J.D.’s office and makes an appearance during a conversation with Dr. Park (Joel Kim Booster).
Scrubs Season 10 Is Increasingly Living Up To The Original Series

It was a real treat for dedicated Scrubs viewers to see Rowdy back on screen, even if it was just for a few seconds – it was definitely a memorable moment. It’s good to know he’s still part of J.D.’s life, although he’s understandably looking a bit older and scruffier after being off-screen for 16 years. The show also cleverly continues the running gag about the animal, highlighting how J.D. treats Rowdy differently than others, as seen when Park jokingly calls him an “emotional support corpse” and J.D. retorts, “Be nice to him, he hasn’t had a walk in 26 years.”
Even though it’s a brief scene, it really shows how the new season of Scrubs is successfully capturing the feel of the original series – something the ninth season struggled with. The show has found a nice balance so far. While characters like Rowdy are clearly nods to fans, it doesn’t rely too heavily on nostalgia. The divorce between J.D. and Elliot, for example, feels fresh and allows the show to explore new storylines and develop its characters in surprising ways, using the passage of time to its benefit.
Fans are hoping Rowdy isn’t the last character from the original series to return. There’s a possibility Dr. Kelso (Ken Jenkins) will appear later on, though it hasn’t been confirmed. We’re also expecting to see Jordan (Christa Millar) and The Janitor (Neill Flynn) again – the Season 10 finale seems like a likely place for their return. So far, the new season of Scrubs has successfully balanced being a fresh show while still paying tribute to the original, and Rowdy’s appearance continues that trend. Hopefully, the remaining episodes will follow suit.
New episodes of Scrubs release on Wednesdays on Hulu.
