DC Comics pioneered comic book crossovers, beginning with the Justice Society of America and the team-ups of iconic heroes like Superman and Batman in titles like World’s Finest. These early crossovers eventually led to the formation of the Justice League of America and brought back classic Golden Age heroes. DC continued to deliver exciting team-up events, culminating in a surprising crossover 17 years ago: Final Crisis: Legion of Three Worlds, created by Geoff Johns and George Perez.
This comic book event united three different versions of the Legion of Superheroes, a historically significant team of teen heroes. The Legion’s history is notoriously complex, and at the time, the team was popular following the ‘Infinite Crisis’ storyline. The story involved Superman traveling to the Legion’s future, where Superboy-Prime ended up after ‘Countdown to Final Crisis’ and rebuilt the Legion of Supervillains. This ultimately revealed a strange truth about DC Comics’ often-confusing timeline.
Final Crisis: Legion of Three Worlds Brought Together the Various Versions of the Legion

The Legion of Super-Heroes has often been a difficult team to follow, and in the past, that was largely due to its huge roster. While the X-Men are often credited with popularizing the “superhero soap opera” style, the Legion actually pioneered it – even influencing the design of new X-Men characters by legend Dave Cockrum. The team’s complex backstory made it challenging for readers to connect with them, but everything changed with the Crisis on Infinite Earths event.
Superboy played a key role in the Legion’s stories, but when DC revamped its continuity with Crisis, Superboy was removed from its history. The Legion continued, but writers struggled to create a consistent backstory without him. This led to a major reboot of the series after Zero Hour. A new Legion team emerged in 1995, reimagining existing characters with a fresh, modern origin. This version lasted until 2004, and in 2005, another new team appeared, lasting until around 2007. Then, Infinite Crisis brought the original Legion timeline back.
As a big DC fan, I always found the whole multiple Legions thing confusing. They never really clarified how they all fit together, and it felt like the older versions just… disappeared. But then Final Crisis: Legion of Three Worlds came along and everything clicked! It turned out the other two Legions were from different Earths, and the story brought all three teams together. Seeing the original Legion alongside its counterparts from other realities actually made sense of the whole situation, and it was awesome to finally see them all fighting bad guys together.
The Legion of Super-Heroes has a complicated past, and its fans were accustomed to the series being restarted with different versions of their favorite characters. But a recent storyline allowed DC to revisit previous iterations of the team and provided a logical framework for its future. Over the next 17 years, three more versions of the Legion emerged, each hailing from a different Earth within the multiverse. Seeing all four versions of the team together was a surprising and unique event for readers in 2008.
