Often considered the best raunchy comedy of its time, this film inspired a wave of copycats. It’s the movie that launched the careers of stars like Jonah Hill and Michael Cera, and it’s recently gained renewed popularity on Hulu, nearly two decades after its debut.
The 2007 comedy Superbad is now attracting a new audience: people who were likely born around the time the movie originally came out. It recently jumped in popularity, landing at number two in the charts, right behind the current top film, the horror movie Together.
Superbad follows high school seniors Seth and Evan as they try to lose their virginity and get alcohol before graduation. They’re hoping to finally fit in with the popular crowd, but their plans are constantly derailed by their own awkwardness and run-ins with the police.
At just under two hours long, Superbad was a bit longer than most comedies released around the same time, but it quickly became one of the best. Both critics and audiences loved it, giving it scores of 88% and 87% respectively. The film was also a huge financial success, earning $170 million at the box office on a budget of just $17 million – making it the 33rd highest-grossing movie of 2007.
‘Superbad’ Is a Comedy That Still Resonates with Audiences

Critics generally agree that Superbad skillfully mixes raunchy humor with genuine emotion, likely because it’s rooted in the real teenage experiences of Seth Rogen and his co-writer, Evan Goldberg. While some reviewers dismiss teen comedies, Superbad is a clear exception – it’s a film that rises above typical adolescent humor.
A 2020 review by Mike Massie of Gone With The Twins praised the film’s often over-the-top and crude dialogue between Michael Cera and Jonah Hill, calling it both incredibly funny and realistically delivered. CNN noted the film was surprisingly emotionally complex, and Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian also shared his thoughts.
“It’s pretty cress and pretty silly, but only a puritanical grump would deny it’s funny.”
Viewers generally agreed with each other. While many offered simple praise like “the funniest movie ever” or “a classic,” some wanted to share more detailed thoughts. For example, a reviewer named Geovanny T. said the film was inspiring, helping people accept themselves, flaws and all, and embrace their true selves.

Look, even if you’ve seen a ton of comedies trying to copy Superbad and you’re just not that into this type of humor anymore, I still think it’s worth revisiting. It really holds up and reminds you why it was – and still is – one of the funniest movies from the 2000s.
