Anime has become incredibly popular worldwide and is now a major form of entertainment. Crunchyroll is the leading streaming service for anime, constantly adding new shows each season. Other platforms like Hulu and HIDIVE are also expanding their anime offerings, including both recent releases and older, classic titles. While these classics demonstrate the breadth and artistry of anime, they often don’t get the attention they deserve because of limited promotion and a lack of current buzz.
HIDIVE, the anime streaming service, updates its content offerings each month, announcing what shows will be added and taken down. The March 2026 update unfortunately includes the removal of both seasons of the classic 1990s anime Orphen, also known as Sorcerer Stabber Orphen. Many fans still appreciate this series, making the news disappointing. These removals usually happen because of licensing agreements or if a show isn’t watched enough. It’s unclear if Orphen will return to HIDIVE, as the removal could be permanent. The series will no longer be available on HIDIVE after March 31st, 2026, but you can still watch it on Amazon Prime Video. It’s currently not available on Crunchyroll or Netflix.
What Is Orphen About?

The anime series, based on Yoshinobu Akita’s original light novel and a subsequent manga, only ran for two seasons in the late 1990s. While the manga continued with several follow-up and origin stories, often drawn by different artists, not all of these expansions have been animated. The story begins six years after a disastrous event at the Tower of Fang, a magic school where a mage named Azalie lost control of a powerful magical sword and turned into a dragon.
The day became known as Bloody August, and Azalie was largely left to fend for herself by the Tower of Fang, with only the young magician Krilancelo offering her support. She had transformed into a massive dragon, and no one knew how to reverse the change, or even if it was possible. Realizing the tower’s elders wouldn’t assist him, Krilancelo gave up his old identity and became known as Orphen, setting out on a quest to restore Azalie to her former self.
The story progresses as Orphen gains trustworthy allies and learns the truth about his connection to Azalie. The anime sequel, Orphen 2: Revenge, released in 1999 immediately after the first season, sees Orphen and his companions embark on a fresh journey filled with monsters and obstacles. They’re joined by a new member who also holds secrets of her own.
