A Game Boy Color game from 1999 is surprisingly being re-released after 26 years. While the original was only available on Nintendo systems, this new version will be available on PC, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S won’t get a dedicated release, but the game will work on those consoles through backward compatibility. We can expect it to launch this winter, though a specific date hasn’t been announced yet.
R-Type DX is a side-scrolling shooting game originally developed by Irem and published by Nintendo. Released in 1999, it was a revamped version of the classic games *R-Type* and *R-Type II*, combining them into a single, colorized experience. *R-Type* first appeared in arcades in 1987 and later came to the original Game Boy in 1991. Its sequel, *R-Type II*, was released in 1989, but unlike the first game, it was never released as a separate, standalone title.
What’s New
City Connection is re-releasing the classic game as *R-Type DX: Music Encore*. The “Music Encore” part of the title hints at added features, specifically new ways to track your score in the arcade version. These include stats like hit ratio and the number of times you’ve used continues, giving players more opportunities to aim for top scores.
To make the game more user-friendly, we’ve included features like rewind, quick save/load, the ability to start with all power-ups, and a rapid-fire option for quick bursts of action.
Worth Revisiting
The original *R-Type* game is a true classic, often hailed as one of the greatest games ever made. It was incredibly influential, popularizing the shoot ’em up genre and inspiring many similar games afterward. However, the older games aren’t easy to play today, so this new re-release could be a fantastic way to both satisfy longtime fans and help preserve a piece of gaming history – if it’s done well.
While there have been a few attempts to bring back the Game Boy Color this year, 2025 hasn’t offered much for fans of the classic console. However, one upcoming game looks incredibly promising and could be exactly what those fans have been waiting for, potentially making up for the lack of retro releases so far.
