Two Nintendo games that were originally planned for release in 1996 are now coming out this year. Nintendo has been a major force in gaming since the 1980s, releasing many incredibly popular and influential titles. However, not every project succeeds, and some games are unfortunately canceled before players get a chance to experience them. In a surprising turn of events, Nintendo is now releasing these two previously canceled games on the Switch and Switch 2.
Nintendo recently revealed all the games coming to Nintendo Switch Online with the addition of Virtual Boy titles on February 17th. Seven games will be available at launch, and nine more will be added later this year. Surprisingly, two of those nine games are titles that never actually came out for the Virtual Boy originally.
Two previously unreleased games, Zero Racers and D-Hopper, are now being highlighted. Zero Racers was intended as the first 3D installment in the F-Zero racing series before development was halted. D-Hopper, originally called Dragon Hopper, is a top-down adventure game where players battle monsters and explore various fantasy levels. Despite being fully completed and promoted by Nintendo in the 1990s, both titles were never officially released.
Why Were These Nintendo Games Canceled?
Why did Nintendo cancel Zero Racers and D-Hopper? Simply put, the Virtual Boy was a huge disappointment for Nintendo. It’s considered their worst-performing hardware ever, and it failed so badly that Nintendo stopped supporting it after just one year. When they discontinued the Virtual Boy, games like Zero Racer and D-Hopper were also cancelled. But now, after about three decades, fans who’ve been waiting will finally get to experience these long-lost games officially.
As of right now, Nintendo hasn’t announced when Zero Racer and D-Hopper will be added to Nintendo Switch Online. We’ll share more details on ComicBook as soon as we have them.
