It’s rare for an actor to have even one movie popular enough to appear in streaming charts, but Mark Wahlberg has achieved something special: he currently has two films charting at the same time, just as the holidays begin. Wahlberg has starred in many different kinds of movies, but he’s recently been focusing on action-thrillers and clearly enjoys playing complex characters.
Mark Wahlberg stars in two new streaming movies with very different roles. In The Family Plan 2 (on Apple TV+), he’s back as Dan Morgan, a former hitman trying to live a normal family life, but gets pulled back into a world of spies. Meanwhile, in Flight Risk (on HBO Max), he plays an assassin who pretends to be a pilot to transport a key witness (Topher Grace) for a mob trial to a safe location. So, you can choose between seeing Wahlberg as a family man caught in espionage, or as a cold-blooded assassin in disguise.
Flight Risk Story & Reviews Explained

Flight Risk centers on U.S. Marshal Madolyn Harris, played by Michelle Dockery, who apprehends an accountant named Winston while he’s hiding in Alaska. Winston has turned against his dangerous mob bosses and Madolyn must transport him to New York City to testify against the powerful Moretti crime family. During the flight, she quickly realizes the pilot, a quirky Texan named Daryl Booth (Mark Wahlberg), isn’t who he claims to be. It’s soon revealed that “Daryl” is actually a hitman sent by the Morettis to kill Winston before he can testify. Though Madolyn manages to subdue the killer, she’s left with a new problem: flying the plane herself with no experienced pilot on board.
Okay, so I checked out the reviews for Flight Risk, and honestly, critics really didn’t like it. Rotten Tomatoes says it’s just over-the-top and doesn’t know when to stop. The critic score is a pretty low 29%. But here’s the interesting part: regular moviegoers seem to have had a much better time! It’s sitting at 62% “Fresh” with over a thousand reviews. A lot of people are tuning in to see Mark Wahlberg go wild as the villain, and if you’re into thrillers that mostly take place in one location, it sounds like Mel Gibson (you know, the director of Braveheart and The Passion of the Christ) delivers a fun, if cheesy, ride.
The Family Plan 2 Story & Reviews Explained

Okay, so I just heard about The Family Plan 2, and it sounds like a fun ride! Apparently, Mark Wahlberg’s character, Dan, is trying to be a normal dad and just wants a nice Christmas with his kids. But his daughter has a secret life, and when he finds out, he takes the whole family on a trip to London. Big mistake! It turns out that trip puts them all right in the path of some dangerous people from Dan’s past. Sounds like his assassin days aren’t quite behind him after all!
Critics and audiences agree: The Family Plan 2 isn’t a masterpiece, both giving it a score of just 36% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it’s a lighthearted action-comedy about family, perfect for some easy holiday entertainment. It’s definitely not the worst movie you could put on while relaxing with the family.
