Crunchyroll, the leading anime streaming service, is celebrating the two-year anniversary of its highest-rated anime ever. For a long time, series like One Piece and Demon Slayer dominated the top spots, but this particular anime only reached number one after its second season. That season was a huge success, allowing it to become even more popular than classics like One Piece and secure its place as the platform’s most beloved series.
Currently, the top-rated anime on Crunchyroll is Solo Leveling, an adaptation of the popular Korean webcomic (manhwa) created by A-1 Pictures. The series was even named Anime of the Year at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards 2025. Solo Leveling quickly gained a worldwide following, telling the story of Sung Jinwoo’s journey from a weak hunter to the nation’s strongest over two seasons. Premiering on January 7, 2024, the show immediately captivated viewers with its compelling story, leading to its immense popularity and record-breaking rating on Crunchyroll.
Crunchyroll’s Newest Global Sensation Was Released Two Years Ago Today

Crunchyroll users have overwhelmingly praised Solo Leveling, giving it over 920,000 reviews and an impressive 4.9-star rating. This puts it far ahead of other popular series like One Piece (around 750,000 reviews) and Demon Slayer (just over 700,000). It’s likely to stay the most popular for a while, as it would be hard for others to reach those numbers. One Piece is now releasing episodes seasonally, and Demon Slayer is finishing its story with movies—neither of which typically generate many reviews on Crunchyroll. The huge success of Solo Leveling is largely thanks to the impact of its second season.
At the end of Season 2, Sung Jinwoo becomes the most powerful Hunter in the country, and the only one who can stop the ant attack on Jeju Island. This achievement marks the end of his long journey to gain enough strength and success to ensure a comfortable and secure life for his family and those he cares about. Many viewers, particularly men, connected with Jinwoo’s story and his desire for this kind of success, which helped make the series so popular.
Following the end of its second season, Solo Leveling dominated the Crunchyroll Anime Awards 2025, winning nine awards. Although some believe the show didn’t quite deserve the top Anime of the Year prize – its popularity really took off with Season 2 – its success is still remarkable. With plans for more content, including a possible movie, a third season, and even a live-action series, Solo Leveling’s popularity isn’t fading anytime soon. It could very well remain Crunchyroll’s most popular anime for many years to come, perhaps even a decade.
