2 Years Later, One Piece Officially Retcons a Frustrating Villain Mistake

Be warned: This article reveals major plot points from the *One Piece* manga! The Holy Knights, a powerful group of warriors and the biggest challenge to the Revolutionary Army, were introduced over two years ago. Led by Saint Figarland Garling – Shanks’ father – they’ve existed for a long time, possibly centuries, and seem to share abilities with Imu. Currently, they are the primary villains in the Elbaf Arc, and we’re beginning to uncover more about them. All known members are World Nobles and have Devil Fruit powers, but their true danger lies in their incredible regenerative abilities – the same powers possessed by the Five Elders. This explains why Monkey D. Dragon views them as such a significant threat.

Gaban revealed a way to beat them, but it likely involves Conqueror’s Haki, a rare ability. And this is just the start – we’ll be seeing much more of these characters going forward. Since they’re so important to the story’s final arc, the confusion surrounding their official name had become annoying. Fortunately, the newest chapter of *One Piece*, which is continuing the backstory in the Elbaf Arc, has finally clarified their name, and it’s a better fit for the original concept.

One Piece Chapter 1160 Finally Fixed the Translation Inaccuracy

The area where the Celestial Dragons live is often called the “Holy Land,” but a more accurate translation would be “Land of the Gods.” Similarly, “God’s Knights” is a better translation for 神の騎士団 than “Holy Knights.”

Fans have long debated the correct English name for the group, particularly Japanese speakers who pointed out translation issues. While the anime and manga have consistently referred to them as “Holy Knights,” many believe “God’s Knights” is a more accurate translation. Chapter 1160 finally clarifies the matter, officially naming them “Holy Knights of God” and revealing details about the God Valley Incident.

According to a post by DawnStussy on X (formerly Twitter), the translation of a key location in the story is more accurate when considering the original Japanese text. The Celestial Dragons consistently call themselves gods and their home, Marijoa, is officially known as the Holy Land. However, the original Japanese suggests Marijoa should be translated as the “Land of the Gods,” which better fits the idea that it’s where all the world’s gods live. Furthermore, the name Marijoa itself has been inconsistently translated over time, appearing as both Maijois and Mary Geoise in official manga and anime releases.

The Holy Knights of Gods Have Authority Over Marijoa

Because the Holy Knights are all World Nobles, they’re incredibly arrogant and quick to flaunt their status, especially when facing those they consider enemies of the “Gods.” Adding “Gods” to their official title is crucial because even among themselves, the Supreme Commander Garling has the power to punish other World Nobles. While they all consider themselves divine, they are still accountable to those with higher authority, which helps maintain order within the Holy Land. Anyone who supports commoners faces immediate execution, as seen with the harsh punishment of Saint Donquixote Mjosgard after the Reverie.

The Celestial Dragons are meant to highlight the harshness of the World Government, though they themselves are unaware of what’s really happening in the world. Vegapunk’s broadcast revealed they were confused when he spoke about the Void Century and Joy Boy. This is different from the Holy Knights, who possess the same powers as Imu and directly serve the world’s hidden leader. While Garling has taken over for Saint Jaygarcia Saturn among the Five Elders, the Holy Knights continue to report to him.

Shamrock, his son, currently leads the group, but hasn’t officially taken over as Supreme Commander, so Garling remains in charge. We don’t yet know how many members there are or what their abilities are, but with the story now in its second arc of the Final Saga, that information will likely be revealed soon. Their attack on Elbaf was just a small taste of their full power. They’re not just strong, but incredibly ruthless, making them a truly frightening force.
