It’s unfortunate that Paul Rudd didn’t get his highly anticipated Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel in Phase 5, despite Marvel Studios hinting at a fantastic plot. Since his live-action debut in 2015’s Ant-Man, Rudd has portrayed Scott Lang and evolved into one of the most influential heroes within the MCU. However, his 2023 storyline didn’t fully capture his significance, which is a pity considering Marvel’s emphasis on quantity over quality at that time. Although they are now making amends for this, we can’t help but mourn the Ant-Man sequel that could have been.
In 2023, the film “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” marked the beginning of Phase 5 by propelling characters like Scott Lang, Hope van Dyne (played by Evangeline Lilly), her parents Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne (Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer), and Lang’s daughter Cassie (Kathryn Newton) into the Quantum Realm. There, they encountered Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors), who had been confined following a long imprisonment. Regrettably, the grand introduction of this villain in the Marvel Cinematic Universe fell short with an underwhelming narrative, not quite matching up to the intriguing story hinted at in the trailers for “Quantumania.
The previews for the movie “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” hinted that Kang the Conqueror might give Scott Lang something he deeply desires – more time. This development follows Scott Lang’s return from being stuck in the Quantum Realm for five years, which meant he missed significant parts of his daughter Cassie’s life. Scott and Cassie reconnected in “Avengers: Endgame,” with Emma Fuhrmann portraying a 16-year-old Cassie. The trailers for “Quantumania” hinted at Kang offering Scott another opportunity, a “second chance,” but it seems this didn’t happen as planned.
In the film Quantumania, Janet van Dyne disclosed additional insights into her past connection with Kang, who hails from her own era and was ensnared in the Quantum Realm. On the other hand, Kang persuaded Ant-Man to retrieve his multiversal power source, which would allow him to break free from the Quantum Realm and carry on his destructive journey across the cosmos. However, this plotline feels routine when contrasted with the emotionally resonant, deeply personal, impactful, and heart-wrenching family narrative that could have unfolded if Kang had extended an invitation to Scott Lang for a chance to return to the past and reconnect with Cassie.
In 2026’s “Avengers: Doomsday,” Paul Rudd will once again don the Ant-Man suit, but it remains to be seen if his Ant-Man family members will join him. The news of Evangeline Lilly and Michael Douglas stepping away from acting has sparked speculation that their characters might meet an untimely end at the hands of Doctor Doom (Robert Downey Jr.) in the Russo brothers’ upcoming film. It would be wonderful if Cassie Lang, played by Newton, could get more attention as Stature, considering her underdeveloped introduction in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.
