Netflix has been releasing a lot of both new shows and returning favorites across many different genres. Fans are eagerly awaiting the final season of Stranger Things, and recent releases like KPop Demon Hunters, The Witcher, and Nobody Wants This are still popular. Now, Netflix is bringing back a sequel to Idris Elba’s thrilling, but often overlooked, movie after two years. This new installment will also address a major problem with the original film.
Netflix has officially announced that Idris Elba will reprise his role in a Luther sequel. Ruth Wilson and Dermot Crowley, who both starred in the original series, will also be returning. While Elba and Crowley last appeared together in the 2023 film Luther: The Fallen Sun, Wilson’s character wasn’t included. She’ll be back for the sequel, which is great news for fans and should make the movie even better.
Jamie Payne will direct the project, which is based on a script by Neil Cross, the creator of the Luther series. Filming is scheduled to start in February 2026. Cross expressed his excitement about reuniting Idris Elba, Ruth Wilson, and Dermot Crowley for the sequel, describing them as family.
Cross feels a deep connection to the characters Luther, Alice, and Schenk, considering them like family. She’s constantly curious about their lives and worried about what dangers might be lurking in London without Luther’s protection. That’s why the team decided to reunite and continue their story.
According to Payne, Neil has once again crafted a compelling and atmospheric story, bringing the cast and fans back together. He expressed particular excitement about working with Idris Elba and Dermot Crowley again, and is thrilled to see Ruth Wilson reprise her role as the captivating Alice Morgan. Payne believes both longtime fans and newcomers will thoroughly enjoy the new installment.
Viewers last saw Alice in the fifth season finale, where she both shot Catherine Halliday and seemingly died after pursuing Luther into a warehouse. She fell from a height and appeared to die, but the character has a history of surviving. While fans were heartbroken by her death in the series, her appearance in the upcoming movie confirms that she somehow survived the fall.
Okay, so the new Luther movie starts with John Luther getting pulled back into a really messy case. Basically, London’s getting hit with these incredibly violent murders, and nobody can figure out how they’re connected. The story hints that solving it won’t be easy for him, because it sounds like everyone – and I mean everyone – is out to get him while he’s trying to save the city. It’s going to be a wild ride, I can tell!
The Luther sequel currently has no release date.
