Big franchises like Marvel, Star Wars, and DC sometimes release disappointing movies – it’s pretty normal (think Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker). But it’s surprising to see a recent DC film appear in the Top Ten movies on Tubi, according to FlixPatrol, and we’re curious who’s watching it.
The superhero sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods has been a major disappointment, especially compared to the first Shazam! movie. The original, which was generally well-received with a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, followed a foster child who gains superpowers and fights the villainous Dr. Sivana. Unfortunately, Fury of the Gods only scored a 49% on Rotten Tomatoes, and critics were harsh. Nadya Martinez of GothamGeekGirl described it as “messy, bland and unfocused,” noting that while it had some funny moments, they were lost in a predictable plot filled with holes and a lack of meaningful consequences.
How Did Fury Of The Gods Land A Top Spot?
We really don’t know what went wrong with Fury Of The Gods. The idea – vengeful gods coming to Earth to reclaim a stolen artifact – was promising. The movie follows Billy Batson and his foster siblings as they try to navigate normal life while also dealing with their superhero powers. Unfortunately, despite having a lot of potential, the film just didn’t deliver.
This movie was widely disliked by both critics and audiences. One viewer bluntly called it “one of the worst movies I have ever seen.” Critic Pete Vonder Haar of the Houston Press pointed out its flaws, including bad CGI, cheesy dialogue, excessive product placement, and the repeated use of the Beastie Boys song “Sabotage.”
You can now watch Shazam! Fury of the Gods on Tubi, for better or worse. If you decide to watch it, we recommend watching the first Shazam! movie beforehand.
