In just two years, the DC Universe (DCU) has made significant progress, and its future looks promising. With the success of *Superman* and more characters planned, it’s interesting to remember how challenging things were for the previous DC Universe in its final years. DC’s Batman director recently defended one of the last films from that earlier universe, criticizing those who are now quick to dismiss it.
Andy Muschietti’s final film in the previous DC Universe era was *The Flash*, a project that sparked a lot of conversation. Muschietti is now working on the new DCU’s *Brave and the Bold* and the *Welcome To Derry* prequel. In a recent interview, he shared that he remains proud of *The Flash*, noting that many people – even some critics – never actually saw the film.
When asked about the reaction to his film and whether it affected his self-assurance, Muschietti explained that they didn’t let the criticism bother them. He said they accepted that sometimes projects you work hard on face challenges, but they remained proud of the film, believing it to be a good one.
Many people missed it, but that’s typical these days – people often criticize things without understanding them, and they quickly follow whatever’s popular. They don’t have the full picture, and often their anger isn’t even about the issue at hand, according to Muschietti.
The Flash Director Still Loves The Movie, Despite The Challenges The Film Faced
The film also faced negative attention due to the controversies surrounding its star, Ezra Miller, which created a major challenge during its promotion. Director Andy Muschietti acknowledged the “undeniable publicity crisis,” but still expressed confidence in the film, saying, “We love the movie. And actually, we really recommend it.”
Looking back, even though it might not have seemed important at the time, the studio really supported us when things were tough with publicity. They could have pulled back, but instead, they fully committed, and we all did too, Muschietti explained. We truly love the film – we poured our hearts and souls into it right up to the very end. I recently rewatched it, and I still loved it.
While *The Flash* earned $271 million at the box office despite a $200 million budget, the results weren’t as strong as the studio expected. The film featured exciting additions like the introduction of Supergirl to the DC Universe and a memorable return by Michael Keaton as Batman – a definite highlight for many viewers.
The movie included fun references to alternate realities and real stories from the making of DC films, such as a version of Superman played by Nicolas Cage that was never released. It even featured the infamous giant spider often talked about in Hollywood. Despite a cameo by George Clooney, these elements weren’t enough to save the film, and it marked the end of a somewhat inconsistent period for DC movies.
Muschietti’s next project, IT: Welcome to Derry, hits HBO on October 26th.
