Netflix occasionally releases animated series that are truly exceptional, often surpassing other shows currently available. Surprisingly, these fantastic programs and movies often don’t receive the widespread recognition they deserve. Series like She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Arcane, Castlevania, and Blue Eyed Samurai are prime examples. However, there’s one show from two years ago that particularly hasn’t gotten the appreciation it deserved.
Despite Netflix’s tendency to cancel shows, The Dragon Prince surprisingly lasted for seven seasons. This sprawling fantasy series is set in the magical world of Xadia and expertly combines magic, mythology, and relatable characters. The story revolves around a war between Xadia and the Human Kingdoms, sparked by the creation of dark magic by a group of rebellious mages. Before this, magic came from six natural sources – the sun, moon, stars, sky, earth, and ocean. Now, these mages are stealing magical energy from Xadia, fueling an ongoing war. The key to ending the conflict lies with three unlikely companions: two princes and the elf assassin originally sent to kill them. Together, they uncover a secret that could save everyone they care about. The series feels particularly relevant today, exploring real-world issues through a fantastical lens.
Magic And Adventure Helped Propel Incredible Character Development
It’s no surprise The Dragon Prince maintains a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. Unlike many shows today that rush their storylines, this series prioritizes developing its characters and story. This slower pace allows viewers to truly connect with each new character, which ultimately enhances the narrative in a way action sequences couldn’t. Similar to Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Dragon Prince appeals to a wide audience and feels surprisingly relatable. It also delivers a powerful message – a message of hope – that’s often missing from modern fantasy, which often favors darker, more cynical themes. The show argues that hope isn’t something we find, but something we create, and that it’s essential for overcoming hardship.
Many shows today lack something truly important: pure, unadulterated fun. Luckily, The Dragon Prince embraces it wholeheartedly. The animation and voice acting perfectly capture the show’s playful spirit, making the story feel incredibly unique and alive. While the core plot—a war between humans and magical creatures—isn’t new, the way this story is told feels remarkably fresh, largely thanks to the clear joy the creators brought to every scene.
There’s A Reason Its Core Fan Base Loves It So Deeply

The Dragon Prince stays true to its own vision, offering a hopeful and heartwarming story. It emphasizes the importance of fighting for love and kindness, while also acknowledging that violence isn’t always the answer – and can even erode our values. The show powerfully illustrates this through a conversation where a character proposes killing a monster to save many lives. The queen responds by questioning the monster’s sentience and family, highlighting that lasting change requires long-term effort, not quick fixes. This message is surprisingly profound for what’s often seen as a simple children’s cartoon, and it effectively challenges the idea that fantasy is just about escapism.
The last season of The Dragon Prince is now available on Netflix, where you can watch all seasons of the show. Although Netflix won’t be making any more seasons, the show’s creators have launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund a sequel called The Dragon King. The campaign has already been successful in raising enough money to potentially continue this surprisingly thoughtful and well-animated story with a touching message.
