Gilmore Girls is one of the few shows that has truly stayed with audiences over the years. While the show features a large cast, certain characters have become especially memorable. Originally debuting on The WB in 2000, Gilmore Girls is largely considered a defining show of that network, even though its final season aired on The CW.
Gilmore Girls, known for its quick dialogue and many pop culture nods, told a gradually unfolding story about Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) and her teenage daughter, Rory (Alexis Bledel). Over seven seasons, the show explored Lorelai’s past, including her difficult relationship with her wealthy parents, Richard (Edward Herrmann) and Emily (Kelly Bishop), and how she built a different life for herself after leaving her privileged upbringing.
As a huge fan, I’ve always loved the fast talking, genuine heart, and quirky comedy of Gilmore Girls. But it’s funny – it feels like the show has actually become more popular since it originally aired on The WB! It really took off again before the 2016 Netflix revival, Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life, and that brought in a whole new wave of fans – and reminded a lot of us why we loved it in the first place.
One of the reasons the show remains so popular is the richly detailed world created by Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband and writing partner, Daniel Palladino. Their fictional town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut, felt incredibly real, even though it mainly served as the setting for Lorelai and Rory’s stories. The town’s unique atmosphere and charming quirks kept viewers engaged and made the show feel like a complete and self-contained universe.
What truly makes Gilmore Girls special isn’t necessarily the plots, but the characters who inhabit its world. As someone who’s watched the show repeatedly over the years, my feelings about the storylines have evolved. However, with each viewing, my understanding of the characters has deepened, and I’ve developed a clearer sense of their importance to each other.
It’s impossible to create a perfect ranking of Gilmore Girls characters that everyone will agree on. This list focuses on how engaging each character is overall. Some characters might seem unlikeable, but they still played an important role by creating drama, providing humor, or helping to explore the show’s central ideas.
20. April Nardini
Played By Vanessa Marano
You might be wondering why April Nardini (Vanessa Marano) is included in a list of the best Gilmore Girls characters, especially since many fans consider her a low point in the series. I understand that reaction, but here’s my take: the way April’s storyline was handled was poorly done, and it didn’t help that most of her scenes happened during seasons that weren’t written by Amy Sherman-Palladino.
Watching April Nardini shake things up on the show really put Luke Danes in a tough spot – it was probably the most challenging situation we ever saw him navigate. Honestly, she served as a real catalyst for the issues between Luke and Lorelai, and that alone makes her a standout character in the whole Gilmore Girls story. Plus, her moments in A Year in the Life genuinely made me laugh, which always earns a character extra points in my book.
19. Taylor Doose
Played By Michael Winters
As a huge Gilmore Girls fan, I always loved Taylor Doose! Michael Winters played him perfectly. He’s one of those background characters who really makes the show. His constant one-upmanship with Luke and his need to be in charge of everything in Stars Hollow actually drives a lot of the plot. Honestly, without Taylor organizing things behind the scenes, we wouldn’t have all those amazing town festivals that give the show so many of its best moments. He’s essential!
18. Christopher Hayden
Played By David Sutcliffe
As a longtime fan of Gilmore Girls, I always felt Lorelai’s connection with Rory’s dad, Christopher Hayden, was the most important relationship she had, even more than any of her romances. I could talk forever about Christopher and Rory’s bond, but what really stands out to me about Christopher is how consistently unreliable he was. It was a defining part of his character.
Christopher was often the most unreliable character on Gilmore Girls, and his appearances were always unpredictable – sometimes exciting, sometimes worrying. He was captivating because he could be incredibly charming one minute and then neglect his responsibilities as a father the next. This inconsistency significantly influenced Rory and Lorelai’s lives and how they navigated challenges.
17. Logan Huntzberger
Played By Matt Czuchry
Before I get into details about each of Rory’s boyfriends, I want to assure you I’ve tried to be unbiased. While I personally prefer Jess, I understand why people like Rory’s other relationships and appreciate what each one brought to her life. Let’s start with Logan Huntzberger.
In my opinion, Logan – portrayed by Matt Czuchry – isn’t as compelling as Rory’s other boyfriends. He mainly functioned as a way for Rory to experience the privileged world her mother, Lorelai, rejected, which is an interesting but somewhat redundant plot point. Logan himself was a carefree and often silly character.
I never really considered him as a person separate from his connection with Rory, and I think that’s intentional. However, it also makes him feel less significant. He still plays a role in the story, but he’s not as compelling as some of the other male characters in Gilmore Girls.
16. Max Medina
Played By Scott Cohen
You might be wondering why Max Medina, who was only on the show for a few episodes, is included here. However, I believe he’s important because his relationship with Lorelai showed her a level of stability she hadn’t experienced before, and ultimately helped her grow and become open to future possibilities.
From the very beginning of Gilmore Girls, it’s apparent that Lorelai avoids serious relationships because she’s afraid of getting hurt. While she’s focused on raising Rory and managing her everyday life, her reluctance to commit goes deeper than just a lack of time. Max, a kind, understanding, and intelligent man, has a lasting impact on Lorelai throughout the series.
15. Jess Mariano
Played By Milo Ventigmila
I always felt like Jess Mariano really got Rory in a way no one else did, and they had a real connection. But let’s be honest, he wasn’t a great boyfriend! And honestly, that’s what made him such a compelling character, in my opinion. I was always fascinated by what was going on in his life outside of his relationship with Rory – he was just a really interesting guy.
Jess wasn’t just defined by his romance with Rory. He had a complicated background – a tough relationship with his mother, an absent father, and a job at Walmart – which gave him depth as a character. And let’s be honest, everyone loves a mysterious, slightly rebellious guy with a leather jacket!
14. Mrs. Kim
Played By Emily Kuroda
Mrs. Kim, played by Emily Kuroda, is a standout character on Gilmore Girls, largely thanks to her unique antiques shop. As Lane Kim’s mother, she’s initially presented as a health-focused Korean businesswoman who isn’t thrilled with Lorelai’s choices as a single mom.
Throughout Gilmore Girls, Mrs. Kim evolves into a surprisingly complex and funny character, even with limited screen time. Her relationship with Lane is often both heartbreaking and hilarious, and this blend of drama and comedy is one of the show’s greatest strengths.
13. Dean Forester
Played By Jared Padalecki
Let me explain why I think Dean Forester, despite his flaws later on, is actually Rory’s best boyfriend. He was a wonderful first love – genuinely sweet, completely smitten with her, and always supportive. Plus, he surprisingly managed to win over Lorelai, which says a lot!
While everything about the show is enjoyable, Dean Forester becomes a much more compelling character when Gilmore Girls portrays him as a more complex part of Rory’s life. He’s a character who changes over time, and his complicated relationship with Rory is central to her coming-of-age story. Although he doesn’t have as much going on externally as Jess Mariano, Dean is actually the most subtly complex of Rory’s boyfriends.
12. Michel Gerard
Played By Yanic Truesdale
Michel Gerard, played by Yanic Truesdale, is a very French concierge who works at the Independence Inn. He’s often frustrating, but also incredibly charming, and quickly becomes a memorable part of Lorelai’s world. Though his personal life remains somewhat mysterious, he’s a consistent presence throughout the series and provides a lot of the show’s humor.
Michel brings a special and often amusing energy to Stars Hollow, particularly through his relationship with Lorelai. He operates on a different plane than most of the town’s residents, making him consistently entertaining to watch.
11. Luke Danes
Played By Scott Patterson
Luke Danes, played by Scott Patterson, is a lovable, if somewhat grumpy, diner owner who seems like a good match for Lorelai. However, while the character has moments of surprising complexity, his constant grumbling eventually felt forced and less believable as the series progressed. I found it difficult to envision a lasting relationship due to this shift in his personality.
Luke is a central figure in Gilmore Girls, and his journey is closely tied to Lorelai’s. He’s a fully developed character even before they become a couple, but their relationship adds even more depth and complexity to who he is.
