20 Years Ago, Green Lantern’s Most Iconic Villain Expanded the Lore in the Best Way Possible

Hal Jordan, known as Green Lantern, is one of DC Comics’ most powerful heroes. Fueled by his strong willpower and a special ring that can create anything he imagines, he’s a key member of the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic police force. For over 65 years, Hal has fought his greatest enemy, Thaal Sinestro – a former mentor who turned evil. Sinestro wields a yellow power ring fueled by fear, making him a constant threat to Hal and the entire Corps. But on March 29, 2006, Sinestro unleashed an unprecedented danger, significantly expanding the scope of the DC Universe.

Most of Green Lantern Volume 4, #10 centers on Hal Jordan handling disputes on Earth and doesn’t immediately involve Sinestro. Meanwhile, in Space Sector 674, the brutal alien Arkillo is defeating his enemies. As he consumes one foe, a yellow light appears, summoning a Yellow Lantern Ring. The ring has determined Arkillo is capable of inspiring intense fear, and formally recruits him into the Sinestro Corps – a powerful team of villains destined to reshape the universe.

The Sinestro Corps Is the Green Lantern Corps’ Dark Reflection

Given Sinestro’s obsessive desire for power and his ruthless nature, it makes perfect sense that he would create his own army – the Sinestro Corps – to challenge the Green Lanterns. This new force, composed of thousands of devoted followers wielding yellow power rings, gave Sinestro the strength and numbers to not only overcome his enemies but also attempt to rule the universe through fear. This development transformed Sinestro from a simple, uninspired villain into a much more compelling and complex character with a disturbing worldview. What’s particularly interesting about the Sinestro Corps is that it’s a dark mirror of the Green Lantern Corps, taking the same fundamental goal – wielding powerful rings – and pushing it to a terrifying and malicious extreme.

As a huge comic book and movie fan, I’ve always been fascinated by the Green Lantern universe, and the Sinestro Corps is just terrifying. Basically, the Green Lanterns are made up of the best of the best – super heroic types with incredible willpower. So, naturally, their enemies are the absolute worst. The Sinestro Corps isn’t just filled with run-of-the-mill bad guys; we’re talking about the most frightening criminals and monsters the universe has ever seen. Their power rings actually seek out people who can inspire fear, so you’ve got everything from terrorists and serial killers to monstrous beasts in their ranks. Seriously, even some major supervillains like Scarecrow and even powerful threats like the Anti-Monitor have joined them at one point or another! Sinestro leads them, and he really brings out the worst in everyone, all in a desperate attempt to destroy the Green Lanterns for good. They truly represent the darkest side of the universe.

Although they are very different, both the Green Lantern Corps and the Sinestro Corps ultimately want the same thing: to keep people safe and maintain peace. However, they have completely opposite approaches. The Green Lanterns protect people by stepping in during conflicts, but they believe in letting everyone govern themselves. The Sinestro Corps, led by Sinestro, believes true safety only comes from controlling people’s freedom – a philosophy that echoes historical fascist regimes. They take the idea of peacekeeping to an extreme level. This creates a fascinating contrast that allows for complex discussions about topics like fascism, law enforcement, and what it truly means to be secure.

The arrival of the Sinestro Corps opened the door to incredible stories, most notably the “Sinestro Corps War,” which pushed the Green Lantern Corps to break its own rules in order to survive. It also introduced popular characters like Arkillo and Lyssa Drak. Since then, this group of ruthless villains has become one of the Green Lanterns’ biggest and most dangerous enemies, embodying the worst the universe has to offer.

The Sinestro Corps Ushered in a New Spectrum of Lantern Corps

The introduction of the Sinestro Corps by DC Comics in 2006 wasn’t just the arrival of a villainous counterpart to an established superhero group. It sparked a significant expansion of the Green Lantern universe, allowing DC to create several new Lantern Corps, each powered by a different emotion and color of light. This ultimately enriched both the Green Lantern mythos and the broader DC Universe, leading to many popular new stories and characters.

As a long-time comic and cinema fan, I always found the introduction of the Sinestro Corps to be a real turning point. Before them, we had groups like the Anti-Green Lantern Corps and the Star Sapphires, but they didn’t really explore how emotions could fuel power like the Green Lanterns did with willpower. The Sinestro Corps, powered by fear, opened the floodgates. Suddenly, the possibilities for other Lantern Corps felt endless! We got the rage-fueled Red Lanterns, the hopeful Blue Lanterns, the greedy Orange Lanterns, and the compassionate Indigo Tribe. Even the Star Sapphires got a revamp, becoming the love-powered Star Sapphire Corps. It’s amazing how many fantastic characters these new Corps introduced – Atrocitus, Larfleeze, Saint Walker… they’ve become some of my absolute favorites in the DC universe.

The various Lantern Corps all tap into the Emotional Electromagnetic Spectrum, the source of all feelings in the universe. Among them, the Black and White Lanterns are the most powerful. Black Lanterns are powered by death itself, representing a total lack of life and emotion. They were the main villains in the famous DC story arc Blackest Night, led by the entity Nekron and his follower Black Hand. This storyline brought back many deceased characters, united the other Lantern Corps, and even led to the introduction of a new Corps in the subsequent Brightest Day event. White Lanterns, on the other hand, embody life and represent the full potential of the Emotional Electromagnetic Spectrum.

The various Lantern Corps and epic stories we see today wouldn’t exist without the Sinestro Corps. Even now, new groups like the Ultraviolet and Sorrow Lanterns are being added, each offering fresh storytelling possibilities. They explore different ideas about feelings, what motivates people, fairness, disorder, control, life, death, and our place in the universe. What started as a straightforward space police series has been revitalized by these new Corps, which examine emotions, different approaches to maintaining peace, and the big questions about existence. And it’s ironic that all of this is due to Sinestro and his followers – a group driven by conquest and violence.
