20 Years on, One of DC’s Most Underrated Movies is A Streaming Hit As Fans Await The Upcoming Sequel

HBO Max recently added a popular, long-time favorite comic book movie, and it’s quickly become a hit! According to FlixPatrol, it’s already reached number 8 on the top 10 list. Plus, exciting news suggests a sequel might finally be in the works.

Inspired by the DC comic Hellblazer, the movie Constantine follows John Constantine (Keanu Reeves), a man who once went to hell and back after a suicide attempt. Knowing he’ll go to hell permanently when he dies, he’s determined to redeem himself. He teams up with police officer Angela Dodson (Rachel Weisz), who is investigating her twin sister’s apparent suicide. Together, they become entangled in a battle between Heaven and Hell, and Constantine is their only hope for survival.

The Sequel Might Finally Give The Film The Flowers It Deserves

The movie Constantine received mostly negative reviews from critics, earning a 46% score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, general audiences enjoyed it more, giving it a 72% rating. David Day from Horror Movie Talk particularly praised the film’s portrayal of biblical figures like the Angel Gabriel and Satan, calling it a refreshing change from typical comic book movies. In contrast, Tony Sokal of Den of Geek felt the film was too dark and visually distracting, preventing it from creating a truly impactful atmosphere.

Despite what critics think, fans are excited about a sequel to Constantine, a project that’s been discussed for years. According to Deadline, the sequel is now officially happening! Warner Bros. is working with Keanu Reeves and the original director, Francis Lawrence, and Akiva Goldsman will write the screenplay. Lawrence told Collider they’ve been brainstorming ideas for two decades, focusing on characters and stories they love. Reeves added that they’ve been trying to get the film made for over ten years, recently presented a story to DC Studios, and received the green light to start writing the script.
