Hellboy begins streaming on Netflix in January 2026
Fans can rejoice as Hellboy will be available to watch on Netflix next month.
According to What’s on Netflix, Guillermo del Toro’s movie will be available to stream on January 1, 2026.
Hellboy had its first showing on March 30, 2004, at the Mann Village Theater, and was released to the public on April 2nd. The film earned $99.3 million in theaters, which was more than its $66 million production cost (according to Box Office Mojo).
The film has been well-received by critics and audiences. It currently holds an 81% rating on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer and a 66% audience score, while Metacritic gives it a score of 72 from critics and a 7.0 from users. These scores generally indicate positive reviews.
I first discovered Hellboy through the ‘Seed of Destruction’ comic, and it completely blew me away! It’s the very first big story Dark Horse Comics did with the character, and it’s what the 2004 movie is based on – both the story and the world it takes place in. Mike Mignola not only created Hellboy but did all the amazing artwork, and he was joined by John Byrne, who I already loved from his work on X-Men and Fantastic Four at Marvel, to write the script. It’s a fantastic collaboration!
Hellboy centers around a demon who was saved as a baby during World War II by Allied soldiers. Now grown, he uses his powers for good as an investigator with the Bureau of Paranormal Research & Defense.
Hellboy teams up with Abe Sapien, a psychic fish-like creature, and Liz Sherman, who can control fire. Together, they work for a bureau that combats supernatural dangers. This often puts Hellboy in the path of powerful enemies, including a revived sorcerer who aims to start the end of the world and force Hellboy to embrace a predetermined fate.
Guillermo del Toro not only directed and wrote the film, but he also collaborated with Peter Briggs on the story. The movie stars Ron Perlman, Selma Blair, Doug Jones, John Hurt, Rupert Evans, and a talented ensemble cast.
