One game that used to be exclusive to the PS4, originally released in 2017, is currently a big hit on Xbox Game Pass, according to the service’s charts. It’s been available through the subscription since August 5th and continues to be popular – holding player interest for over a month, which is longer than many games added in August and September.
If you’re remembering the best PS4 games from 2017, titles like Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, and Gran Turismo Sport likely spring to mind. However, a game often overlooked as a PS4 exclusive during its first year was Rain World, a challenging survival platformer created by Videocult and released by Adult Swim Games. Now, eight years later, it’s become a very popular title on Xbox Game Pass.
Xbox Game Pass Charts
Although Rain World isn’t the most popular game on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, it’s currently number one on the Xbox Game Pass Standard chart. It’s not included with Xbox Game Pass Core, so it doesn’t appear on that chart at all. We don’t know how long it will stay at the top, or even remain available on Xbox Game Pass, but this is a great success for the indie title, particularly since it’s been part of the subscription service for over a month. The game isn’t very long to complete either, typically taking players between 20 and 30 hours, unlike a recently added new Square Enix RPG that requires a much longer time commitment.
Critic vs Consumer Divide
Rain World received mixed reviews from critics, with scores ranging from 59 to 71 on Metacritic. However, players themselves seem to really enjoy the game. It currently has an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam, the highest possible rating for a PC game, based on 95% of its 25,548 user reviews. On Xbox, it has a solid 4 out of 5 star rating.
What’s creating this disagreement among players? Several factors contribute. When the game first launched in 2017, it suffered from significant performance and optimization flaws. While these issues have since been resolved, review scores haven’t caught up. Furthermore, the game is notably difficult and often unclear, demanding a lot from players and potentially leaving a negative first impression. Unlike most 2D platformers where you’re incredibly powerful, in Rain World you’re a vulnerable creature low on the food chain. This makes it feel more like a survival game than a traditional 2D platformer, which may not appeal to all fans of the genre.
About the Game
If you’d like to learn more, Rain World is a special game that combines the challenge of a survival experience with the fun of a 2D platformer. You take on the role of a small slugcat, lost from its family after a huge flood. Your goal is to find food and a safe place to hide during the heavy rains that could wipe out everything, all while trying to stay safe from predators who are also hunting for food. And naturally, you’re also searching for your family.
