2024’s Best Anime Film Confirms Blu-ray Release Date With a Special Surprise (But There’s a Catch)

Tatsuki Fujimoto, the creator of popular manga like *Chainsaw Man* and *Fire Punch*, has been making comics for about ten years. One of his short stories, *Look Back*, recently became an anime movie produced by Studio DURIAN, and many consider it the best anime film of 2024. *Look Back* was already popular with fans, but the anime adaptation made it even more well-known. The story follows Ayumu Fujino, a high school student who loves creating four-panel manga for her school newspaper and is praised for her artistic talent. She unexpectedly shares her manga slot with Kyomoto, a classmate who rarely attends school.

Fujino felt envious when Kyomoto received more attention for her artwork, so she dedicated herself to learning how to create manga. This led her to meet Kyomoto in sixth grade. Despite some initial resentment, the two girls became close friends and started collaborating on manga. The film *Look Back* explores themes of grief, loss, and self-discovery through the eyes of an artist. After streaming on Amazon Prime last year, the anime’s official X account recently announced the Blu-ray release date, but it will initially only be available in Japan.

Look Back Blu-Ray Has Several Surprises For Fans

The Blu-ray of the film will be available on January 21, 2026. The first edition will be limited and include original artwork by director Kiyotaka Oshiyama. According to the official *Look Back* website, there will be two Blu-ray versions at different prices, each with unique bonus content. The standard Blu-ray costs 5,500 yen and includes audio commentary from director Kiyotaka Oshiyama and animator Toshiyuki Inoue. A DVD version with the same commentary will also be available for 4,400 yen on the same day. For 11,000 yen, the limited first edition includes two Blu-ray Discs, a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc, and a CD.

I checked out the special features, and they’re pretty great – you get the same audio commentary as the original release, plus some behind-the-scenes footage of the team working on the project. They’ve also included a mini-album of music by Haruka Nakamura, and a lot more. As for when it’ll be available outside of Japan, they haven’t announced a date yet, but I’m hoping we’ll hear something after the Japanese release. I learned that the creator, Fujimoto, wrote this story as a way to honor someone he’d lost. It’s a very personal story, exploring the struggles and emotions of an artist, and it seems to draw from his own life. The film first premiered in Japan on June 28th, 2024, and then came out internationally in October. It’s been a big hit, too – *Look Back* even won Film of the Year at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards, and it’s received a bunch of other nominations and awards since then.
