2025 Psychological Thriller With 92% on RT Becomes a Major Streaming Hit (& It’s Perfectly Timed)

This year’s Oscars are shaping up to be very competitive, with no clear frontrunners. While many predict One Battle After Another will win Best Picture, Ryan Coogler’s Sinners is a strong competitor – and if it wins, it would be the first horror film to take the prize in 35 years, only the second ever. The race for Best Actor appears to be between Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon) and Timothée Chalamet (Marty Supreme), and for Best Supporting Actor, it’s between Stellan Skarsgård (Sentimental Value) and Sean Penn (One Battle). However, the Best Actress category is the most unpredictable of them all.

Jessie Buckley is currently the favorite to win, but Rose Byrne would be a very worthy winner as well. Byrne’s performance in Mary Bronstein’s If I Had Legs I’d Kick You is arguably the best of her already impressive career, whether she’s doing comedy or more dramatic roles. Plus, the film has already found success, streaming on HBO Max.

How Is If I Had Legs I’d Kick You Doing on HBO Max?

When it comes to viewership on HBO Max around the world, the Best Picture nominees Sinners and One Battle After Another are very popular. Sinners, directed by Coogler, is currently the most-watched, and Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another is in third place.

On February 2nd, viewership told a different story in the United States. Bronstein’s film was the most-watched, while Sinners didn’t even rank among the top ten.

Wow, this is a huge win for If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, and it’s really building some buzz before the awards ceremony on March 15th. I’m already predicting we’ll hear the film’s name called a lot that night, especially since Conan O’Brien is hosting for the second year running. And here’s the really interesting part: this movie marks Conan’s first serious dramatic role! A lot of us expected him to sneak in a few laughs, but he completely commits to the drama, and honestly, he’s fantastic. It’s a surprisingly powerful performance, and a real testament to his range as an actor.

O’Brien portrays Linda, who is the therapist of Byrne’s character. Ironically, Linda is a therapist herself, but she’s currently overwhelmed with personal problems and finding it hard to cope. She’s dealing with a flooded apartment, a sick daughter, and a husband away at sea, leaving her feeling isolated and increasingly desperate.

To claim the number one spot, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You outperformed several other popular titles, including fellow new releases I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not and 33 Photos from the Ghetto. It also beat out previous contenders like The Smashing Machine and One Battle After Another, as well as library staples such as the Twilight series, the first three John Wick films, and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Viewership for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is likely increasing as fans pay tribute to the late Catherine O’Hara.
