2025’s Best‑Reviewed Gaming Publishers Aren’t At All Who You’d Expect

When it comes to releasing new games, established publishers like Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft have a significant edge. Their long history and wealth of popular game franchises give them a strong starting point for big releases each year. However, that doesn’t guarantee success every time.

As a big gamer, I always check Metacritic to see how the year’s releases stack up. They’ve started doing a really detailed breakdown of each major publisher, and their 2025 report was interesting. Square Enix and Capcom seemed to be doing great, but it really pointed out some struggles for Nintendo and Sony. Honestly, seeing where they ranked, especially with new companies trying to break into the console market, makes me a little worried about what the future holds for those two giants.

Square Enix Dominated 2025’s Publisher Rankings

Metacritic has published its 2025 rankings of video game publishers, evaluating the quality of their releases throughout the year. The rankings are based on review scores, showing which companies released the most games and received the best critical reception. Square Enix topped the list with nine well-received games, achieving a perfect 100% score. Remasters and remakes of popular titles like SaGa Frontier 2, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Dragon Quest, along with the new release Octopath Traveler 0, contributed to their success. Gamirror Games followed closely behind, also earning a 100% positive score with five games.

Besides Tencent, Capcom and Xbox also performed strongly in 2025. Capcom received positive or excellent reviews for 93% of its 7 games, and Xbox—including Activision, Blizzard, and Bethesda—saw success despite challenges in the console market. Nintendo and Sony, however, faced difficulties. Nintendo’s Switch 2 launch and other major titles resulted in 18 releases, but only 68% received good or great reviews. Sony fared even worse, ranking 21st out of 28 developers. While titles like Death Stranding 2 were well-received, weaker games like Lost Soul Aside dragged down their overall score. Interestingly, Sony’s highest-rated game on Metacritic was The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered for PC. Square Enix’s strong performance, along with success from smaller developers like Gamirror Games, demonstrates the diversity within the gaming industry.

Why Sony And Nintendo’s Struggles Are Worrying For Fans

The gaming landscape is shifting, with more games being playable across different devices and a growing focus on PC gaming. Nintendo and Sony are responding by increasingly relying on exclusive games to attract players. Nintendo has always had a strong library of its own games, and Sony, after briefly releasing some games on PC, is now focusing on creating titles only available on PlayStation. This puts a lot of pressure on these exclusive games to be successful, both with players and reviewers, as they’re becoming key to standing out from competitors – and potential new players like those using Valve’s Steam Machine.

Considering these results, the recent Metacritic Publisher Rankings should be a serious warning for both companies. Although they released some good games in 2025, they need to improve to compete with leaders like Square Enix and Capcom, who consistently release games on multiple platforms. It’s concerning that neither company ranked in the top ten, which shows how challenging it is to launch a truly successful new game these days. This is made even more difficult by slowing production of the Switch 2. 2026 offers a crucial opportunity for these companies to turn things around—and it might be their last chance to prove they still deserve their long-held positions as industry leaders.
