The anime adaptation of Saka Mikami’s popular high school romance, *The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity*, premiered this summer, nearly four years after the original series was released. The series already had a strong following, and the beautiful animation by CloverWorks only increased its popularity. However, international fans experienced a delay due to issues with Netflix. The first season recently finished airing in Japan, but there’s been no news about whether it will continue. Aniplex celebrated the finale with a special video on their YouTube channel, but didn’t announce any plans for a sequel.
It’s typical for a hit show like this to announce a continuation soon after it finishes airing in Japan, but that hasn’t happened yet. The official social media accounts have only mentioned the season finale. While reliable but unofficial sources, like @MangaMoguraRE, suggest a special event is planned for November 1st, 2025, there’s been no official word. With the source material having over 160 chapters, there’s plenty of story left to adapt. Although a second season announcement might take a while, the show’s popularity suggests more seasons are likely.
What Is the Plot of The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity?

The story revolves around students from Kikyo Private Academy and the nearby Chidori Public High School, who seem to live completely separate lives despite their schools being next door to each other. There’s a strong rivalry between both the students and teachers at the two schools. The main character, Rintaro Tsumugi, attends Chidori High, a school known for its rebellious students. Because of his stern appearance, people often misjudge him and assume he’s dangerous, and attending Chidori only reinforces that perception.
He’s taken aback when Kaoruko Waguri, a frequent customer at his family’s bakery, isn’t scared of him and actually tries to talk to him. They were just starting to get to know each other when he discovers she attends Kikyo Academy, a fact that worries him because he fears their connection will bring her trouble. As they try to build a relationship, they face challenges stemming from the rivalry between their schools, as well as opposition from students and teachers.
In Japan, the manga currently has 19 volumes, with the 20th due out on October 9, 2025. So far, only 8 volumes have been translated into English and are available to purchase on the official Kodansha website. The English version of volume 9 will be released on October 7, 2025. The first season of the anime covers the first 39 chapters, so readers can pick up the story in the manga at chapter 40. All chapters are available digitally through Kodansha’s K Manga app.
