While 2025 hasn’t been a total blockbuster year for every film – some superhero movies didn’t quite reach expectations – we’ve still seen some incredible successes, and it’s great to see things finishing strong.

As 2025 wraps up, the race to have the year’s biggest movie is shaping up to be a thrilling one, with at least two strong contenders. This is especially true following the recent success of a film that has already grossed over $1 billion, adding even more excitement to the end of the year.

The Competition To Be 2025’s Final Biggest Film Already Has A $1B+ Bar

In just over two weeks, Zootopia 2 has earned more money at the box office than the first Zootopia film, which made $1 billion. As of December 15th, Zootopia 2 has grossed $1.13 billion worldwide, proving how popular and successful the Zootopia series can be.

This essentially means any movie hoping to perform as well would need to also earn over $1 billion, which has been difficult in 2025. So far, only Ne Zha 2, Zootopia 2, and the live-action Lilo & Stitch have reached that level (according to The Numbers and Box Office Mojo). However, one upcoming film looks like it might have a chance to compete.

With the original Avatar being a massive financial success, the new film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, releasing December 19th, is expected to be a strong contender for one of the year’s biggest box office successes.

Both Avatar and Avatar: The Way of Water were massive box office hits, earning $2.9 billion and $2.3 billion worldwide, respectively. This suggests the third film will likely be successful too, unless unforeseen issues significantly affect its performance in 2025. Regardless of the outcome, the franchise proves that this time of year can deliver strong competition at the box office.

Avatar 3 Could Beat Zootopia 2 & 1 Other Movie To Be The Highest-Grossing Movie Of 2025

Right now, Zootopia 2 is the second highest-grossing movie of 2025, having earned less than Ne Zha 2‘s impressive $2 billion. If Avatar: Fire and Ash performs well at the box office, it’s likely to become the year’s biggest film.

While achieving success wouldn’t be easy, surpassing the box office numbers of Zootopia 2 wouldn’t guarantee Avatar 3 would reach the heights of Ne Zha 2 – there’s a nearly $900 million difference between the two. However, if Avatar: Fire and Ash performs as well as Avatar 2, it would likely be the highest-grossing film of the year.

As the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash approaches, it will be interesting to see how the film impacts the year’s box office rankings. It should provide a final, exciting competition before the start of 2026.
