Zach Cregger, renowned for his acclaimed horror films like “Barbarian” and “Weapons”, is considering expanding his horizons into the comic book realm. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter promoting “Weapons”, Cregger mentioned several scripts he has penned. After “Weapons”, his next project will be a new “Resident Evil” movie, and following that, he has plenty of ideas up his sleeve. Cregger hinted at an original science-fiction script and a screenplay for a film based within the DC Universe. Interestingly, this DC Universe film wouldn’t follow the conventional superhero narrative.
Cregger stated, “Following ‘Resident Evil,’ I’ve got a science fiction movie lined up that’s entirely original. After that, I have another script completed which is set within the DC Universe, but it’s not your typical superhero story. I wrote this before ‘Barbarian.’ Then, there’s another project I’m currently working on that resembles ‘Nightcrawler,’ but all these projects are unique and original. However, in the fast-paced film industry, plans can shift suddenly, so I’m not making long-term plans beyond ‘Resident Evil.’
Back in 2022, Cregger initially talked about his intriguing DC script, which he referred to as his most cherished work, during an interview with ComicBook. Set in Gotham City, this story is his personal favorite among all that he has written so far. However, it’s essential to note that the script has not been formally presented to anyone at DC Studios yet. Speculations about Cregger’s script suggest that Harley Quinn and the Joker may appear, but they are not presumed to be the primary characters. Instead, the plot is rumored to revolve around a henchman.
This summer, DC Studios kicked off its cinematic lineup with James Gunn’s Superman movie, which received favorable reviews and was financially successful. Meanwhile, Cregger is gearing up for a prosperous summer as well; Weapons has garnered broad acclaim (with some early reactions calling it “a masterpiece”) and is expected to have a robust opening weekend. Predictions suggest a domestic debut of around $25-30 million for the film.
The co-heads of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran, have demonstrated a readiness to explore unconventional ideas when planning their movie lineup. They’re not confining themselves strictly to superhero films. For instance, the DC film “Clayface,” initially not part of the plan, was pitched by Mike Flanagan and is described as an R-rated body horror movie. Gunn aims for DC movies to encompass various tones and styles, mirroring the diversity found in the comics. If Gunn approves of Cregger’s idea (no matter what it entails), there’s a high likelihood the film will be produced. Notably, the movie doesn’t have to belong to the DC Universe franchise; instead, Gunn intends to establish an Elseworlds label, offering filmmakers the opportunity to bring unique perspectives with stories that exist outside the primary narrative continuity.
As the highly anticipated title “Weapons” garners significant attention this year, filmmaker Cregger is rapidly emerging as a sought-after talent. It’s no surprise that Sony recruited him for the upcoming “Resident Evil“, which aims to bring a unique twist to the franchise by not strictly adhering to the game series’ lore. If “Resident Evil” succeeds and continues Cregger’s winning streak, DC Studios would be wise to consider a meeting with him. Gunn and Safran are prioritizing quality over quantity, planning for only 1-2 theatrical releases annually. Collaborating with a gifted writer/director like Cregger would further strengthen DC Studios’ position in today’s competitive theatrical scene.
