In a thrilling development for DC fans, the upcoming R-rated spin-off movie from DC Studios in 2026, titled “Clayface,” has unveiled its central character who simultaneously serves as the main antagonist. Amidst the anticipation for “The Batman Part 2” and “The Brave and the Bold,” this gritty, body horror film promises to be a unique addition to the live-action Batman universe.
Written by Mike Flanagan, who penned “Doctor Sleep,” and directed by James Watkins of “Speak No Evil” fame, “Clayface” introduces Tom Rhys Harries, known for his role in “Doctor Who,” as Matt Hagen.
In James Gunn’s DC Universe, the upcoming spin-off of Batman features Harries as Matt Hagen, a promising actor whose face gets disfigured by a criminal. As his career crumbles following the disfigurement, he seeks help from a scientist, leading to a body horror storyline and eventual transformation into Clayface, the shape-shifting nemesis of Batman.
Filming for “Clayface” has begun in the U.K., with pictures from the set revealing Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen, who is poised to become a future Batman antagonist. These images are believed to be taken early on during the production of “Clayface”, as Hagen appears bloody and bandaged, indicating that he has recently undergone disfiguration but hasn’t yet engaged in any scientific experiments that will give him the power to change his shape.
Harries was additionally apprehended sans bandages and bloodstained makeup, unveiling his clean-cut appearance that propelled him to Hollywood fame, reminiscent of a leading man in films.
In the subsequent photos, Harries was again depicted as bandaged Hagen, but this time without his jacket, implying that he might be bare-chested during the scene. The jacket appeared to be worn by the actor only during breaks.
The setting of the production has changed the Liverpool Crown Court into a hospital resembling Gotham City, where character Hagen is expected to receive treatment for his gangster-related injuries, which are likely to cause permanent disfigurement.
Bystanders at the DC Studios filming site recorded a video of someone (presumably Hagen) being hastily taken to Gotham City General Hospital.
Furthermore, actor Eddie Marsan from Ray Donovan was spotted filming a scene for Clayface, where a press conference was being held outside a hospital. It appears that the reporters are gathering for fresh news as Hagen has been injured. The entertainment news source Apocalyptic Horseman has reported that Marsen will portray the character’s manager in this production.
Production for DCU’s body horror series kicked off in August, promptly causing a stir online as images of film sets, police cars, and various Gotham vehicles surfaced.
The production of Clayface is scheduled to start about a year prior to its September 11, 2026 release, and it’s anticipated that the movie will be made with a modest budget of around $40 million within the DCU (DC Universe).
Apart from Tom Rhys Harries and Eddie Marsan, it’s anticipated that Max Minghella from ‘A Handmaid’s Tale’ will portray the detective character John. Additionally, Naomi Ackie known for ‘Mickey 17’ is set to take on the role of Dr. Caitlin Bates, the scientist who transforms Hagen into Clayface in the story.
The Latest Updates on the DCU’s Batman Mythos
Fans need to be patient for about a year until they can see Clayface, but these behind-the-scenes photos suggest glimpses of the DCU film’s early storyline following his disfigurement. It is uncertain whether more scenes will be filmed on location or in studio sets, however, the movie’s limited budget should emphasize the use of real effects rather than CGI.
The creation of Clayface is happening while efforts to launch The Brave and the Bold have been challenging, with attention primarily on The Batman Part 2. However, James Gunn has given assurances that the DCU’s Dark Knight reboot is progressing favorably, as the movie continues in the script-writing phase by an unnamed writer, suggesting a smooth process.
As a movie aficionado, I must say that the pace at which “The Brave and the Bold” unfolds remains undetermined. However, it’s clear that the DC Universe is already weaving threads from the Batman lore. For instance, in the upcoming season of “Peacemaker,” not one but two characters are reportedly leaving Gotham City behind. Furthermore, the premiere episode introduces the enigmatic Batman nemesis, the White Rabbit.
