2026 Has an Open-World RPG That Revives a Dormant Anime Series

Video games based on anime, or spin-offs from existing anime series, are consistently popular because many anime stories naturally fit the video game format. Some of the most successful gaming franchises, like Pokemon and Digimon, started as anime. Therefore, it’s no surprise that a major anime-inspired RPG is already planned for release in 2026. This game is based on a series that concluded in 2021 and hasn’t been actively featured since, marking a revival for fans.

Netmarble’s open-world RPG, The Seven Deadly Sins: Origins, is scheduled for release in January 2026. The game is based on the popular manga and anime series The Seven Deadly Sins, which has already finished its original run. It will allow fans to revisit the world and characters they love with a brand new, original story.

The Seven Deadly Sins Was One of Netflix’s First Big Anime Hits, And Fans Want More

The anime series The Seven Deadly Sins first appeared in Japan in 2014 and soon became available on Netflix in English-speaking regions. It was one of the first anime series Netflix exclusively licensed, and helped pave the way for the platform to offer more anime content. The show quickly became a hit with US viewers, ranking among the most-watched series on Netflix within a day of its debut. While some fans feel the quality of the anime declined in later seasons, the series as a whole—combining the original manga and the early anime episodes—remains very popular.

The anime series The Seven Deadly Sins ran for five seasons, concluding in 2021 with a complete adaptation of the original manga. Since then, the main characters haven’t had any new animated stories. While a sequel manga, Four Knights of the Apocalypse, and its new anime (started in 2024) exist in the same world, many fans still miss the original series and its beloved characters.

I’ve been following the development of The Seven Deadly Sins: Origin, and it’s exciting to see it finally nearing release. It was first announced back in 2022, right after the anime finished its main storyline. Now, almost five years later, fans like me are getting a brand new story with familiar faces from The Seven Deadly Sins.

The Seven Deadly Sins: Origin Lets Players Enter the World of the Show

Netmarble has announced that The Seven Deadly Sins: Origin will be released on January 28, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, and mobile devices. This open-world anime RPG features characters from the original The Seven Deadly Sins series, but tells a completely new story – it won’t simply rehash events from the anime. This game is essentially a fresh take on the original series, presented as a video game.

In The Seven Deadly Sins: Origin, players take on the role of Prince Tristan of Liones, a character familiar from the anime series. You’ll journey through the expansive world of Britannia, striving to bring peace back to the land. The game includes beloved heroes from the anime, as well as brand new characters created for Origin. As a free-to-play game, it’s expected that you’ll likely obtain these Seven Deadly Sins characters through a gacha system.

In addition to action-packed combat and exploration, Origins will include relaxing activities like cooking, fishing, and finding hidden treasures. It’s shaping up to be similar to Genshin Impact in terms of gameplay, but set in the world of The Seven Deadly Sins with characters and a story from that universe. If you’re a fan of The Seven Deadly Sins, this game, launching in January, is definitely worth looking into.
