2026 Horror Reboot of Iconic Franchise Breaks a 27-Year Trend (& It’s Good News for Fans)

Brendan Fraser will eventually reprise his role in a new The Mummy movie, but first, a different take on the franchise is coming to theaters. This new Mummy film, directed by Lee Cronin, aims to recapture the original horror elements of the series. Instead of an action-adventure, it focuses on the unsettling mystery of a missing girl. The trailers suggest a genuinely creepy and atmospheric experience, fitting for Cronin, who previously directed the horror film Evil Dead Rise. As the April release date nears, the movie has now received its official rating.

The latest Mummy film, directed by Cronin, has received an R rating due to intense violence, gore, strong language, and some drug content. This is a change for the series, as all previous Mummy films featuring Brendan Fraser, and even the 2017 reboot with Tom Cruise, were rated PG-13.

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy Being Rated R Makes Sense

The recent Mummy movies were made PG-13 for good reason. The films starring Brendan Fraser aimed for the fun, adventurous style of Indiana Jones, focusing on exciting scenes and humor. The Tom Cruise reboot, however, was intended to kick off a larger shared universe featuring Universal’s classic monsters. Both versions chose PG-13 because they wanted to attract a broad audience and maximize ticket sales. For a long time, studios have preferred PG-13 ratings for their big-budget films, believing it leads to higher profits at the box office.

When it comes to the new Mummy film directed by Cronin, an R rating is the best choice. While many PG-13 horror movies have done well, this Mummy is aiming for true horror, and an R rating will allow the filmmakers to deliver the full intensity they’re promising. The recent trailer shows disturbing themes like possession and body horror, and softening those elements to get a PG-13 rating could result in a disappointing film.

This approach also allows Cronin’s The Mummy to establish itself as a unique film. The fourth film with Fraser will likely aim for a PG-13 rating to appeal to a wider audience and maximize summer box office revenue. Instead of competing with each other, Cronin’s version can be a truly frightening, R-rated horror movie, while Fraser’s film can deliver classic action and adventure. Because the two films are so different in tone and style, they won’t be constantly compared, and both have a good chance of being successful.

The previews suggest that The Mummy will be a scary movie, and that could actually draw audiences to theaters. Horror films generally do well, and last year several R-rated horror movies exceeded expectations. With a gap in new horror releases, The Mummy has the potential to become a popular choice for fans – if people enjoy it and spread the word.
