2026 Spy Movie That Flopped In Theaters Becomes Instant Global Netflix Hit

Humint has snuck into audiences’ hearts on streaming.

I’m a big fan of Ryoo Seung-wan, and I was really excited for his new spy movie, Humint. It’s part of a cool series of films he’s been building – it started with The Berlin File back in 2013 (which did amazingly well, making almost five times its budget!) and continued with Escape from Mogadishu in 2021, which was huge that year. Humint is a really interesting story about spies from both North and South Korea who have to team up, and things get even more complicated when romance enters the picture. Sadly, it didn’t do as well in theaters as the other two, making a little over $13 million when it cost around $16 million to make. Still, I thought it was a solid addition to the series!

The new Netflix movie, Humint, quickly became a global hit after its release on March 31st. According to FlixPatrol, which tracks streaming performance, it was the most-watched movie on Netflix worldwide as of April 3rd.

This movie is performing better than many other popular films currently on Netflix. In fact, seven out of the top 10 movies are new releases from 2026. These include the sci-fi action film War Machine starring Alan Ritchson, the latest installment in the Peaky Blinders saga, Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, with Cillian Murphy, and the Thai crime thriller The Red Line. Here’s the complete list of the top 10 movies on Netflix worldwide as of April 3rd:

#1 Humint (2026)
#2 The Red Line (2026)
#3 Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man (2026)
#4 Untold: The Death & Life of Lamar Odom (2026)
#5 Mardaani 3 (2026)
#6 40 Acres (2024)
#7 War Machine (2026)
#8 Eat Pray Bark (2026)
#9 Let Him Go (2020)

The South Korean film Humint is quickly gaining popularity on Netflix around the world. It appeared on the Top 10 movie charts in 38 countries shortly after its release, and now appears in the Top 10 in 83 regions. It’s currently the number one movie in 17 countries, including Hong Kong, Indonesia, Kenya, Mexico, Qatar, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Taiwan, Vietnam, and South Korea.

Human intelligence gathering, or Humint, hasn’t become widely popular in the United States yet. Currently, the top ten movies in the country are all in English, including recent releases like the new Anaconda film, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, The Bad Guys 2, Bohemian Rhapsody, and Minions: The Rise of Gru – with another Minions sequel scheduled for release in July.

Following the huge success of the South Korean series Squid Game, the United States – a key market for Netflix – has shown growing enthusiasm for Korean films and shows. All three seasons of Squid Game currently rank among Netflix’s most popular non-English series ever. Season 1 remains the most-watched season overall, with season 2 at No. 3 (after season 1 of Wednesday) and season 3 at No. 4.

American audiences have already shown they enjoy several South Korean shows and movies, including the zombie series All of Us Are Dead, the disaster film The Great Flood, the dark comedy Good News, and the K-drama When Life Gives You Tangerines. If Humint gains popularity in the U.S. following its success abroad, it could become a major streaming hit, despite not performing well in theaters.
