The highly anticipated horror franchise is returning in 2026 with a new installment featuring terrifying creatures. Following a thrilling cliffhanger in the 2025 film, and utilizing innovative filming techniques, the sequel is generating excitement among fans. Early reviews suggest this latest entry could surpass both the previous film and the acclaimed originals directed by Danny Boyle, delivering a truly intense and frightening experience.
Following this year’s hit horror film, 28 Years Later, comes the sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. The original introduced audiences to Jamie, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and his son, Spike (Alfie Williams), amidst a terrifying outbreak. While full of scares, 28 Years Later also explored complex themes about human nature. Early reviews for The Bone Temple, based on preview screenings, suggest the sequel delivers even more thrills and is set to be a frightening success when it hits theaters on January 16th. You can find some of the positive reviews below.
The Bone Temple is a bold and unusual sequel to 28 Years Later, shifting focus away from the infected to delve into themes of cults, trauma, mental health, and empathy. I admire its daring and unique vision, and it’s likely to be even more divisive than 28 Years Later. A video discussion will be available in January.

With ’28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,’ the series takes a darker and more introspective turn, expanding its story with both new mysteries and resolutions to old ones. Ralph Fiennes delivers a stunning performance, bringing remarkable depth and nuance to his role.

Nia Da Costa continues to prove she’s a fantastic director with the latest installment, and it’s definitely worth watching! Ralph Fiennes delivers an outstanding performance, especially in one truly incredible scene that earned a round of applause. Don’t miss it!

Wow, just saw the first screening of #28YearsLater: #TheBoneTemple and I’m still reeling! Seriously, it’s intense – everything is turned up to the max. Be warned, it’s really graphic, so you might want to bring a sick bag! And Ralph Fiennes? Absolutely incredible. He completely blew me away.

Will 28 Years Later Continue?
Although 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple is scheduled to be released next year, a third movie hasn’t been officially confirmed yet. Director Danny Boyle has mentioned having an idea for another installment, but fans may have to wait a while longer to see if it actually happens. 28 Years Later and 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple were filmed back-to-back, and many of the same characters will appear in both. Notably, Nia DeCosta (known for The Marvels and Candyman) is directing The Bone Temple; Danny Boyle is not returning as director for this sequel.
Earlier this year, the writer of 28 Years Later, Alex Garland, talked about the central ideas behind both films and his hopes for a third movie. He explained that the entire story, or potential trilogy, explores how we learn from the past while trying to build a better future. It examines how we use—and often misremember—history when shaping the present. Garland believes this theme is particularly relevant today, as our current understanding of the past is often inaccurate and incomplete.
