DC Studios’ upcoming TV show, Lanterns, is already noteworthy. Set to be the fifth project and second live-action series in the new DCU this summer, Lanterns will be a realistic, police procedural-style drama. It will follow two Lanterns: John Stewart, a new recruit, and Hal Jordan, a seasoned hero.
DC Studios is making history with the logo for its upcoming series, Lanterns. It’s the first project in the new DC Universe to be branded as an “HBO Original.” This is significant because HBO is known for critically acclaimed, high-quality television shows like Game of Thrones, The Sopranos, and Succession, boasting a legacy of award-winning content over the past 50 years.

Unfortunately, the same success wasn’t achieved with Season 2 of Peacemaker. It was released on the Warner Bros. streaming service, HBO Max (previously known as Max) instead.

Like Creature Commandos, this show wasn’t branded as an “HBO Original” and instead had new episodes released weekly on Max. This approach isn’t unexpected, as Max rarely features animated series.

While Lanterns could be the first DC Universe project debuting as an HBO Original series, it’s not the first DC Studios production to reach this level of recognition. The Penguin premiered new episodes on HBO while also streaming on Max, and is widely considered one of the best DC series ever made. A second season is even being considered, despite initial plans for it to be a limited run.

DC Studios shared new logos for all the upcoming movies and shows James Gunn is planning for the DC Universe in 2026. This includes the summer blockbuster Supergirl, the sci-fi detective series Lanterns, and a spin-off focusing on the Batman villain Clayface which will be a horror-themed story.
The release of Lanterns has been pushed back to late summer, rather than the anticipated August-September timeframe. The eight-episode series will center on Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, who team up to solve a murder mystery in the Midwest.
Lanterns’ HBO Branding Has a Deeper Meaning
Following the announcement of DC Studios’ plans in January 2023, the series Lanterns was presented as a large-scale, high-quality production, similar in style to the HBO show True Detective, which is still running today.
The team behind the upcoming series Lanterns is aiming for a fresh approach. According to showrunner Chris Mundy, they wanted to build a realistic and relatable story within the show’s established, fantastical world. The result is described as a complex, character-driven drama in the style of an HBO series, and it will be released this summer.
The team behind the upcoming “Lanterns” series suggests it could be a standout project for the DC Universe. Showrunner Mundy is known for the Emmy-winning success of “Ozark,” while co-creator Damon Lindelof famously created “Lost.” Adding to the talent, co-creator Tom King is an award-winning comic book writer, having received an Eisner Award.
Many people are worried that the upcoming Lanterns series will focus too much on realistic crime and not enough on the exciting, space-based adventures that fans love about the Green Lantern universe.
