HBO has announced plans for its 2026 shows, and we now have a better idea of when to expect the new Green Lantern series. Called Lanterns, the show will premiere on HBO and HBO Max next year, giving fans a fresh take on iconic heroes like Hal Jordan and John Stewart within the DC Universe. Though it’s a major priority for the network, a specific release date hasn’t been revealed yet.
HBO recently shared updates on two popular shows. First, they announced that the Game of Thrones spin-off, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will premiere in January. More recently, they confirmed that Season 3 of Euphoria is scheduled to arrive in Spring 2026.
Now that we know the release dates for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms – starting January 18, 2026, and finishing February 22, 2026 – fans have a clearer idea of when to expect Lanterns. It’s likely Lanterns will be released sometime after February 22nd, 2026.
For months, the only official news about the upcoming Green Lantern TV series came from a February 2025 interview with Deadline, where DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran mentioned it was expected to premiere in “early 2026.”
Many had taken this to mean the series would debut sometime between January and March 2026.
Now that Euphoria is scheduled for release in the spring, Lanterns will probably be released either before then, or later than its currently announced ‘early 2026’ timeframe.
We expect to finish A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms by the end of February. This would allow us to air Lanterns for about eight weeks, starting in early March and ending around the end of April, and then fit Euphoria into its planned Spring release window in late April or early May.
The upcoming series Lanterns will feature Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, two Green Lanterns. Described as a cosmic mystery in the style of True Detective, the show will follow the heroes as they investigate a series of disturbing crimes, taking them on a journey from the American Midwest to the outer reaches of space.
Why 2026 Is a Massive Year for DC Studios
Following the success of its first film, Superman in 2025, and the continued popularity of Peacemaker Season 2, 2026 is set to be a huge year for the recently established DCU.
Okay, so HBO’s given us a peek at their plans, and it looks like Lanterns is going to be the first project kicking off the new DC Universe – I’m guessing we’ll see it around March or April. After that, the big screen will get some DC action with the Supergirl movie starring Milly Alcock, which is currently slated for June 26th, 2026. It’s exciting to see things finally taking shape!
Currently, the DC Universe’s only other scheduled release besides that is the horror comic adaptation, Clayface, which will hit theaters on September 11, 2026.
The franchise is expected to gain even more viewers later this year, though this isn’t confirmed. Currently, there’s nothing in production to fill that timeframe, but some believe the second season of Creature Commandos might be released after Clayface (you can find more details about Creature Commandos Season 2 here).
This plan would establish Lanterns, Supergirl, Clayface, and Creature Commandos as the main DC Universe films for 2026. Other standalone stories, known as Elseworlds projects, could also be released to complete the DC Studios schedule.
