A new Batman film is scheduled for release in 2026, and it could offer a different take on a story Christopher Nolan didn’t fully explore in his Batman films. Warner Bros. is currently developing many DC projects under James Gunn, aiming to build a cohesive franchise with both interconnected stories and standalone adventures. This new Batman movie seems to be separate from the main DC Universe, and it will be based on a highly-regarded Batman storyline from the comics.
The latest movie is titled *Batman: Knightfall*, which is exciting news for fans of DC Comics. *Knightfall* is a famous Batman storyline that introduced the villain Bane, who quickly became popular after first appearing in *Batman: Vengeance of Bane* just a few months prior. In the story, Bane puts Batman through a grueling series of fights before ultimately defeating him.
Christopher Nolan Already Adapted Batman: Knightfall

Many Batman enthusiasts are aware that Christopher Nolan drew inspiration from the *Knightfall* storyline. Specifically, *The Dark Knight Rises* attempted to weave together multiple narratives simultaneously, which ultimately made the film feel overstuffed. Zack Snyder faced a similar issue with *Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice*. He tried to cram in the *Death of Superman* story, a Batman versus Superman conflict, and Lex Luthor’s introduction, resulting in a movie that would have benefited from being split into two separate films.
Christopher Nolan’s *The Dark Knight Rises* borrowed elements from the *Knightfall* storyline, famously including a scene of Bane breaking Batman’s back, just like in the comics. However, this was just one part of a film largely based on the *No Man’s Land* story, which felt rushed due to the movie’s many plotlines. While *The Dark Knight Rises* was enjoyable, the *Gotham* series arguably handled the *No Man’s Land* story more effectively, and the upcoming *Batman: Knightfall* adaptation in 2026 might offer a more complete portrayal of Bane.
Batman: Knightfall Should Easily Top Christopher Nolan’s Movie

The story of Bane would be better told in an adaptation of *Batman: Knightfall* than in *The Dark Knight Rises*. A *Knightfall* adaptation could really focus on Bane and the consequences of Batman’s injury. Plus, it’s planned to be released as a series of animated films – a format DC successfully used for *Watchmen* and *Crisis on Infinite Earths* in 2024, with *Crisis* getting three films to cover the whole story.
Although the exact way DC will adapt the *Batman: Knightfall* story is still unclear, the general outline for two movies is apparent. The first film would likely depict Bane systematically breaking Batman, using a series of villain attacks to wear him down before delivering the final, crippling blow. The second movie would then focus on Azrael taking over as a harsher, more brutal Batman, and Bruce Wayne’s comeback to reclaim his role and end Azrael’s destructive actions.
This adaptation will allow for a more thorough exploration of Bruce Wayne’s psychological and physical recovery after breaking his back – something *The Dark Knight Rises* had to speed through, diminishing the impact of that storyline. Because it’s animated, the film can also include a larger number of villains assisting Bane without the expense of hiring many major actors. Plus, it’s a great opportunity for DC to introduce Azrael, a compelling character who could become a standout in the animated universe.
As a big Batman fan, I’m really hoping a new movie could finally get Bane right. Tom Hardy was fantastic in *The Dark Knight Rises*, but honestly, it was often hard to understand what he was saying, and the film kind of turned him into a sidekick for Talia al Ghul. It really didn’t capture the terrifying, imposing figure he was in the *Knightfall* comics. I’d love to see them really explore his backstory – the Nolan film touched on it, but the animated movies have shown there’s so much more there. This could be the chance to make Bane the truly frightening villain he deserves to be, something even Christopher Nolan couldn’t quite achieve back in 2012.
