2026’s Spider-Noir Reveals 1 Major Recast from Tobey Maguire’s Trilogy (Photos)

A familiar character from Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man movies will return in this year’s Spider-Noir, but with a different actor. The new live-action series, coming to MGM+ this spring, will consist of eight episodes and tells the story of a struggling private detective in 1930s New York. Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage will play the lead role. While Cage previously voiced Spider-Man Noir in the Spider-Verse animated films as a version of Peter Parker, this show will feature Ben Reilly in the role.

Esquire magazine recently gave fans a first look at Lamorne Morris (from New Girl) as Robbie Robertson in the upcoming MGM+ series Spider-Noir. According to the report, Robertson is now a freelance journalist searching for stories within the city, but he still maintains a friendship with Nicolas Cage’s character, Ben Reilly, also known as The Spider.

Bill Nunn, the actor who sadly passed away, is well-remembered for his role as Robertson in the Spider-Man movies starring Tobey Maguire. Throughout the trilogy, his character consistently defended Spider-Man, arguing he was a hero and not a threat, while working at a New York newspaper. The film Spider-Man 2 even suggests Robertson figured out Peter Parker was secretly Spider-Man.

J. Jonah Jameson’s city editor at the Daily Bugle is often Robertson, who provides a level-headed perspective compared to Jameson’s fiery personality. Robertson has also worked his way up to editor-in-chief at the Bugle during various storylines in Marvel Comics.

I’m so excited to see that the actress from New Girl is only the second person to ever play this character in live-action! It’s amazing considering how often the character has shown up in animated form over the years.

Nicolas Cage’s new series is offering a unique viewing experience: it will be released in both a classic black and white version and a full-color version. Esquire recently shared a first look at Robbie Robertson, the detective character (inspired by Spider-Noir), from both versions of the show.

I’m really excited about the casting news for Spider-Noir! They’ve got Jack Huston, who you might know from Boardwalk Empire, taking on the role of Flint Marko, aka Sandman. It’s cool to see a fresh take on the character, especially since Thomas Haden Church played him so well in Spider-Man 3 and even made a cameo in No Way Home. I’m curious to see what Huston brings to the part!

MGM+ is bringing together a fantastic cast for its new eight-episode series, Spider-Noir, set to launch this spring. The show will star Nicolas Cage, Lamorne Morris, Brendan Gleeson, Jack Huston, and Li Jun Li.

How Robbie Robertson Fits Into MGM+’s Spider-Noir

As a big fan, I’m really hoping Spider-Noir stays true to Robbie Robertson’s vibe, even though he’s jumping around in a different time. I can totally see him using his skills as a reporter to write about Nic Cage’s Spider-Man. And knowing he’s pals with Ben Reilly? Yeah, I bet he’ll figure out his secret identity before the eight episodes are over.

Bill Nunn’s Robbie Robertson was an established editor at the Daily Bugle, but the Robbie Robertson in Spider-Noir is younger and still working as a freelancer. However, he might be able to get a full-time position at the Bugle if he breaks a big story about the noir superhero – who, in the new MGM+ show, won’t be called Spider-Man Noir.

Rumors suggest Tobey Maguire might return as Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as early as December in the film Avengers: Doomsday, with a planned follow-up appearance in Secret Wars next year.
