Marvel Studios has hinted at a new Punisher series coming to Disney+ later this year. Jon Bernthal will reprise his role as Frank Castle, following a cameo in the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again. In that series, he helped Daredevil (Charlie Cox) track down a dangerous killer, but ultimately ended up imprisoned by the villainous Wilson Fisk (Kingpin).
Even though the special episode of The Punisher isn’t coming out for several months, the show is already hinting at the character’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The trailer for Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again offered the first glimpse of this, showing – at the 57-second mark – a prison-like facility run by Kingpin. This is where he holds both political opponents and masked heroes, including The Punisher.

Fans last saw Bernthal’s character in a grim, prison setting during the after-credits scene of the first season of Daredevil: Born Again.

The special presentation featuring The Punisher is expected to arrive after the second season of Born Again. Because a prison location is shown in the new episodes, many believe Frank Castle will also appear. However, Marvel hasn’t officially confirmed his involvement yet.

Okay, so here’s the deal with the upcoming Punisher reboot. Frank Castle finds himself locked up – and it’s a seriously tough cell, all steel and no give. He has to break free, because a new villain, Ma Gnucci, is stepping in as the big bad, and if he doesn’t escape, there’s no way he’s going to stop her. The whole thing is set to come out in 2026, and the pressure’s definitely on for him to bust out early!

Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again is the second series released as part of Disney+’s effort to bring back popular Marvel shows that originally streamed on Netflix. This revival continues the stories and characters from the Defenders Saga, and Born Again is the first of several new projects, followed by a special presentation featuring The Punisher and more seasons of the Daredevil reboot.
How Will Daredevil: Born Again Set up Punisher’s Special?
Jon Bernthal is reprising his role as Frank Castle in Daredevil: Born Again after a four-year hiatus. This marks his first major appearance as the character since his Netflix series concluded in 2019.
The upcoming special presentation featuring The Punisher will pit the violent Marvel hero against Ma Gnucci, a powerful and dangerous crime boss. This character has a connection to Frank Castle’s past, as she led the group originally responsible for the deaths of his wife and daughter – a storyline taken directly from the comics.
Before Frank Castle can confront the mayor and her allies, he needs to escape from the prison he was left in at the end of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2. The upcoming season of the Daredevil reboot might show Charlie Cox’s Daredevil trying to break out of a prison owned by Wilson Fisk, and in the process, freeing many vigilantes – including Frank Castle – to help him fight against the city’s corrupt mayor.
Amidst the confusion, Bernthal’s character might seize the opportunity to escape. He could abandon Matt Murdock and his mission to defeat Wilson Fisk, choosing to follow his own path as a vigilante.
