Marvel Comics first introduced the Black Panther 21 years ago, and that character’s rich backstory later became central to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. For years, Black Panther stories shifted between Wakanda and the United States. Whether defending Wakanda as its king from threats like Killmonger, or working with the Avengers on global problems—as seen in storylines like ‘Enemy of the State’—Black Panther typically operated independently, or sought advice only from his mother when dealing with issues concerning his nation.
Shuri was first introduced in Marvel Comics on March 16, 2005, in Black Panther (Vol. 4) #2, as a previously unknown sister. She’s since become an important character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Marvel Introduced Shuri In 2005

The fourth volume of Black Panther launched the famous “Who is the Black Panther?” story arc, which explored the history of Wakanda’s protectors through flashbacks. Created by Reginald Hudlin and John Romita Jr., this series revealed previously unseen facets of the Black Panther’s legacy. A significant addition to the story came on March 16, 2005, with the introduction of Shuri, a new character to both the Black Panther world and Marvel Comics.
The story showed Black Panther’s past, revealing how he earned his title through combat. Although the Black Panther title is passed down through family, each successor must prove their worth by defeating challengers who want to become king. This challenge happens annually, open to anyone who believes they can win. We saw Shuri first participate in this ritual, leaving the palace to compete for the throne. However, her brother T’Challa won, defeating their uncle S’Yan, the current Black Panther, and becoming the new King of Wakanda. While Shuri was upset she lost to her brother, it ultimately worked out for the best.
The flashback scene was particularly notable because it introduced Shuri, a character who hadn’t previously appeared in any Black Panther comics. Shuri was the daughter of King T’Chaka and Queen Romanda, though her father passed away before her birth. T’Challa’s biological mother, N’Yami, died shortly after he was born, and Romanda later became his stepmother. Shuri had been excluded from family matters for her own protection, which led her to pursue studies in nuclear physics. This made her incredibly valuable, even though people didn’t initially recognize her potential.
Throughout the story, Shuri cautioned her brother about the vulnerability of the Vibranium, but he dismissed her concerns. When Klaw exploited this weakness and seized control, Shuri found herself in a dangerous situation and bravely defended her country, ultimately killing the Radioactive Man to protect it. This act finally earned her brother’s respect, and he began training her to become a hero. Since then, Shuri has become a vital and respected member of the Wakandan Royal Family.
Shuri Has Gone On to Become Important in the MCU

Although Shuri first appeared later in the Black Panther comic books, she’s been a significant character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe almost from the beginning. She wasn’t present when Black Panther debuted in Captain America: Civil War, which featured the death of their father, but she played a key role in the first Black Panther movie as T’Challa’s sister and the brilliant head of Wakanda’s scientific research. She designed Black Panther’s technology and significantly improved his suit, allowing him to face nearly any challenge. Following T’Challa’s death in the MCU, Shuri’s importance has only grown.
Shuri briefly took on the mantle of Black Panther in Marvel comics, and this also occurred in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Although she appointed M’Baku as the new king of Wakanda to govern the nation, she continued to operate as Black Panther, demonstrating enough strength to even defeat Namor in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. With a potentially major part to play in Avengers: Doomsday, Shuri has quickly become a vital character in the MCU, just 21 years after her first appearance in Marvel Comics.
