21 Years Later, This Sleeper Hit Mystery Series Is Finally Getting an Anime Adaptation

Created by Tadashi Agi (a writing team consisting of Shin Kibayashi and Yuko) and illustrated by Shu Okimoto, the manga series The Drops of God first appeared in 2004 and gradually became one of the most celebrated adult manga series ever. The original story ended in 2014, but the creators followed it up with a sequel that ran from 2015 to 2020. The series, which revolves around the world of wine, is hugely popular in Japan, Korea, China, and France. While it hasn’t received as much attention in Western countries due to inconsistent publishing and availability, that’s likely to change with the upcoming anime adaptation, even though the manga concluded several years ago.

Although there’s been no official confirmation yet, a well-known anime and manga news source on X (formerly Twitter), @MangaMoguraRE, reported that a new website domain related to the anime series has been registered. This often means an announcement is coming within the next month. We’ll learn more details about a potential anime adaptation later, but news could arrive before the end of the year. It’s rare for a series that came out over 20 years ago to get an anime, but The Drops of God is unique and deserves wider attention.

What Is the Plot of The Drops of God?

I’m completely hooked on this story! It follows Shizuku Kanzaki, who works at a beer company called Taiyo Beer. He gets some shocking news – his long-distant father, a super famous wine critic, has passed away. But here’s the catch: to inherit his dad’s incredible wine collection, Shizuku has to go on a treasure hunt! His father left clues in his will about 13 legendary wines – the 12 Apostles and a mysterious 13th one called Les Gouttes de Dieu – and Shizuku needs to find and identify them all. It’s a fascinating challenge!

The challenge was already difficult, but Shizuku has another obstacle: his stepbrother, Issei, a famous wine critic, is competing for the same goal. While Issei is a wine expert, Shizuku has deliberately never tasted wine – a way of rebelling against his father’s intense and unusual training methods. Their father, Yutaka, had tried to sharpen Shizuku’s senses from a young age, but ironically, he never let Shizuku actually drink wine.

I have to admit, I was immediately hooked by Shizuku’s story! He started out really reluctant to get into wine, especially with the tough memories of his childhood and his relationship with his father. But his desire to beat Issei ultimately drove him forward. It’s fascinating to learn that all the harsh training he endured as a kid actually gave him this incredible talent for describing flavors and aromas – he really tastes and smells things in a way most of us can’t! And it’s awesome seeing how much support he gets from his friends, particularly Miyabi Shinohara, who’s also training to be a sommelier. It really adds to his journey!
