As a comedy fan, I’ve always loved Paul Rudd – the guy’s got a knack for hilarious roles, and films like The 40-Year-Old Virgin, I Love You, Man, and even Wet Hot American Summer are instant classics. But let’s be real, for many of us, he’ll always be Brian Fantana from Anchorman, and that movie just keeps getting funnier with age. Rudd himself has always spoken fondly about making it, but he recently shared one thing he does regret about the whole experience.
I was so excited to hear Paul Rudd talking about Anchorman again while he was promoting Anaconda! He shared something that really struck me – his one regret from making the movie. Apparently, after they finished filming, he realized he should have grabbed the Sex Panther cologne as a souvenir. He even said he wondered why it hadn’t crossed his mind to try and get it while they were still on set! It’s funny to think about something so iconic almost being lost to time, and I totally get why he wishes he’d snagged it now.
Why Paul Rudd Wanted The Sex Panther Prop From Anchorman
One of the funniest moments in the original Anchorman movie happens when Ron Burgundy (played by Will Ferrell) meets Fantana. Fantana shows Burgundy a secret cabinet filled with colognes, and when asked what he’ll wear, Fantana chooses Sex Panther by Odeon. This cologne is so potent it’s banned in nine countries, and its packaging is just as over-the-top – it comes in a panther head-shaped bottle that even roars when you open it!
When Fantana tries on Burgundy’s cologne, Burgundy immediately points out its incredibly strong, gasoline-like scent. This prompts Rudd to deliver his iconic line about it working “60
This scene is fantastic and perfectly highlights how lost the crew from Burgundy are – they really don’t seem to know what’s going on! But it’s the ridiculously elaborate design of the Sex Panther cologne box that truly makes the scene, and it’s easy to understand why Paul Rudd wanted to keep it. It’s a guaranteed conversation starter and a truly unique item for any collection.
Paul Rudd’s latest comedy, featuring Jack Black, is now playing in theaters as Anaconda. You can also stream Anchorman on Paramount+.
