It’s rare for any TV show to maintain quality throughout its entire run, but for a fantasy series to do so, and still feel fresh after over two decades, is truly remarkable. While fantasy has become increasingly popular on television in recent years, the shows vary greatly in quality. The genre is still evolving, especially in the wake of Game of Thrones, and honestly, fantasy TV has always been somewhat inconsistent.
Creating a truly great fantasy story is challenging – it needs a detailed and interesting world, plus characters we care about who are driven by a strong purpose. The fantasy series that consistently deliver excellent seasons always seem to have all these elements working together seamlessly. Luckily, one of the best is returning later this year, and it still holds up remarkably well after all this time.
Avatar: The Last Airbender Is a Rare Fantasy Show With No Bad Seasons

Last year marked the 20th anniversary of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and it’s easy to see why the show remains so popular – every season is fantastic. From the very beginning, with its classic story of fighting against tyranny, to the thrilling four-part series finale, ATLA stands out as something special. While the basic idea of a fantasy quest isn’t new, the show is unique thanks to its richly developed world, its relatable and imperfect characters, and its perfect mix of funny and serious moments.
What truly makes Avatar: The Last Airbender special is its richly imagined world and unique magic system – they’re compelling enough to draw viewers back for repeat viewings. Each season cleverly builds on these elements, revealing new bending styles and memorable places. Throughout the series, you’ll find a consistent blend of insightful themes, humor, and exciting action. It’s a show that consistently gets better, and even after 21 years, it still feels relevant, which explains its lasting popularity.
21 Years Later, the Nickelodeon Series Has Aged Perfectly

As a lifelong animation fan, I’ve revisited a lot of older shows, and I’m always a little worried they won’t hold up. But honestly, Avatar: The Last Airbender still feels incredibly fresh, even 21 years after it first aired. What’s amazing is that the show’s big ideas – things like war, the horrors of genocide, and the effects of colonialism – still feel incredibly relevant, maybe even more so now. And rewatching it as an adult, I’m really struck by how complex the characters are and how powerfully their personal struggles and growth resonate. It’s a show that really gets better with time.
Even now, Avatar: The Last Airbender is still a fantastic show for its original fans. The animation holds up well, and its world-building and action scenes are still among the best in the fantasy genre. Surprisingly, the humor remains funny, too. It’s a true classic, which makes the upcoming reboot even more anticipated.
Avatar: The Last Airbender Is Making a Comeback With Its Aang Movie Later This Year

Given the consistently high quality of Avatar: The Last Airbender and its dedicated fanbase, it’s understandable the story didn’t end with the original show. While The Legend of Korra received a mixed reaction, it gave the creators a chance to explore new ideas while still capturing what made the first series so good. The recent live-action adaptation on Netflix, regardless of how fans feel about it, further proves the show’s lasting impact. And the most anticipated continuation of the story is still to come, with its debut just around the corner.
Fans can look forward to seeing more of Aang’s story this fall when The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender arrives on Paramount+. While comics and The Legend of Korra have already explored his life as an adult, this new series will be a welcome return to the world and Team Avatar. It could also open the door for future stories focusing on popular characters like Zuko or the Kyoshi Warriors, and build excitement for the next installment in the Avatar saga. Luckily, Avatar: The Last Airbender remains popular with fans, meaning there’s a lot to anticipate in the years ahead – and hopefully, the upcoming sequels and spinoffs will be just as captivating.
