23 Years Ago, This 10/10 Cartoon Network Series Ended (And It’s Very Hard to Stream Now)

This week marks the 23rd anniversary of the end of a fantastic Cartoon Network series. Sadly, it’s currently difficult to find and watch the original episodes, as they’re no longer available on streaming services. Cartoon Network was incredibly innovative in the late 1990s and early 2000s, taking chances on a wide range of talented creators and shows. This allowed many unique artistic voices to shine, and that spirit of creativity continued for years after.

A beloved period for Cartoon Network brought us many now-classic animated series, but it also meant saying goodbye to some favorites. One of those was Courage the Cowardly Dog, which finished its run on Cartoon Network 23 years ago, on November 22, 2002. The show aired for three years and ten days, and sadly, it’s currently unavailable to watch on any streaming service. It’s one of the classic series Warner Bros. removed from HBO Max.

What Is Courage the Cowardly Dog?

Created by John R. Dilworth, Courage the Cowardly Dog follows the adventures of Courage, a timid dog who lives with his owners, Muriel and Eustace, on a remote Kansas farm. Each episode, Courage faces bizarre and terrifying creatures and situations, working to protect his oblivious owners from danger. He battled everything from monsters and aliens to strange fungi, always finding inventive solutions to overcome the challenges he faced.

The show lasted for four seasons and a total of 52 episodes, which is impressive for a cartoon. Although Courage the Cowardly Dog could have continued indefinitely, the creators decided it was the right moment to end the series. The final episode beautifully wraps up long-standing mysteries, such as Courage’s origins, and concludes his personal story. Throughout the series, Courage was a brave dog who would do anything for his family, despite his own lack of self-confidence.

“Courage the Cowardly Dog” cleverly played with the contrast between Courage’s bravery when facing danger and his overall fearfulness. He constantly had to watch out for threats, but often struggled to explain them to his owners. What Happened to Courage the Cowardly Dog?

Courage the Cowardly Dog was a popular animated series on Cartoon Network. Although Warner Bros. did remove it from HBO Max along with other classic shows, it was the last of these older programs to leave the platform. The show has been a cornerstone of the recent wave of nostalgia, especially during the early 2020s with Warner Bros., and it even launched the now-discontinued Checkered Past nostalgia block on Adult Swim. It’s evident that the series remains well-loved.

Despite its popularity, Courage the Cowardly Dog is currently difficult to watch. It was taken off HBO Max and isn’t available on any major streaming services. While other classic Cartoon Network shows have found new homes, that hasn’t happened for Courage. The show did reappear in 2021 with a crossover movie, Straight Outta Nowhere: Scooby-Doo! Meets Courage the Cowardly Dog, which is now available to buy or rent digitally and in stores.

While you can buy episodes of Courage the Cowardly Dog on platforms like Apple, it’s surprisingly hard to find, considering how great the show is. It’s a true Cartoon Network classic, and stood out from other popular shows when it originally aired. That’s why it still has a dedicated fanbase and resonates with people even 23 years later – there’s a little bit of Courage in all of us. It really is one of a kind.
