Today marks 24 years since Family Guy aired what was thought to be its last episode after being cancelled by Fox. Looking back, that final episode was certainly strange! The show has had an unusual journey—few animated series have managed to survive in the same way. It started strong with Fox, debuting in a prime-time slot right after the Super Bowl and receiving significant support. However, after two seasons, things changed, and the show nearly didn’t make it to a third.
Originally, Family Guy was canceled after two seasons, but Fox gave it a limited chance to improve with a few more episodes. Unfortunately, those episodes weren’t enough to secure its future on the network. The last episode aired, “Family Guy Viewer Mail No.1,” would have been the show’s finale if it hadn’t later become incredibly popular through reruns and DVD sales. Twenty-four years ago today, it almost marked the end of the series.
Family Guy’s First Final Episode Aired 24 Years Ago Today
Today marks the 24th anniversary of the Family Guy episode “Viewer Mail No. 1,” which aired on February 14, 2002. This episode was the last of the show’s third season and concluded its original run on Fox. It signaled the end of an important period for the series, and paved the way for future changes. Those first three seasons were later shown on other networks like Adult Swim – which often aired revived shows – and were released on DVD, a popular format at the time.
The show’s first three seasons were incredibly successful, both in initial sales and through repeat broadcasts. This led Fox to revive the series with a fourth season after a three-year break. As Family Guy approaches its 450th episode and a new season, it’s clear the show has consistently thrived and was never at risk of cancellation. It’s become a major hit for Fox, Disney, and the entire world of adult animated television.
Looking back after 24 years, it’s funny to see how popular Family Guy has become. When the show originally aired, it was a typical animated sitcom, so the final episode wasn’t meant to conclude a complex storyline like you often see in adult animation today. However, Family Guy still decided to end things with a special, anthology-style episode, allowing them to tell a bunch of wild and unusual stories they wouldn’t normally be able to fit in.
Family Guy Went All Out For Its Cancellation Finale

The first “Family Guy Viewer Mail” episode was unique because it presented Brian and Stewie as characters within a show, rather than just the usual series. It also introduced anthology stories that playfully broke the show’s established reality. While later seasons of the show became much more outlandish, the early ones had subtle limits to how far they would stretch the world of Quahog. These anthology segments allowed the writers to experiment and have fun with different ideas.
I remember watching those early Family Guy segments and they were wild! The first one introduced a genie and Peter wished he had no bones, which was instantly hilarious. Then, each character got their own wacky superpowers in the second segment. And the third? It basically turned the whole family into a version of The Little Rascals. What was great about these segments was that they weren’t part of the regular show’s timeline, so they could really go for it with the humor. There were some truly classic visual gags, like the bone transplant scene at the end, Meg growing her fingernails, and the characters’ strangely large heads – especially in that Little Rascals segment. It was all just really fun and memorable.
This episode is a genuinely enjoyable one and would have made a satisfying series finale. It successfully hinted at plenty of future potential for Family Guy had it been cancelled, which is a big part of why it resonated with viewers. Fans quickly fell in love with the first three seasons, and Fox recognized they had a hit on their hands. Later improvements in ratings confirmed this, and Family Guy continues to be popular today.
