Even though Nickelodeon is known for shows aimed at kids, it’s often included surprisingly scary characters. Think of Angelica from Rugrats, Vlad from Danny Phantom, Roger from Doug, or Vicky from Fairly Oddparents – they all posed a threat to the heroes we loved. But twenty-four years ago, a truly creepy character emerged from the sea, managing to be both terrifying and funny. This dark copycat has kept returning to cause trouble in Bikini Bottom, and remains one of the most frightening villains in a show that’s usually lighthearted and cheerful.
The SpongeBob SquarePants episode “Frankendoodle” features SpongeBob accidentally creating a mischievous, animated counterpart to himself named DoodleBob. The story starts when SpongeBob finds a pencil dropped into the ocean. He soon discovers this isn’t a normal pencil – whatever it draws comes to life! DoodleBob immediately causes trouble, and SpongeBob and Patrick try to stop him. Despite appearing simple, DoodleBob quickly proves to be a clever and formidable opponent.
The first episode introducing the strange character DoodleBob shows SpongeBob and Patrick trying to erase him with a pencil’s eraser. However, DoodleBob uses this against them. Luckily, SpongeBob is able to trap him inside a book because DoodleBob is a drawing. Even though trapped, DoodleBob keeps appearing in later episodes. Nickelodeon even made a video collecting every single time the SpongeBob double has shown up throughout the series, which you can watch below.
What Does SpongeBob Think of DoodleBob?

Tom Kenny, the voice of SpongeBob SquarePants for many years, recently shared a story about one of the show’s villains. In a special collection of episodes, Kenny explained that SpongeBob once drew an evil version of himself using a magic pencil. He even admitted feeling bad for the villain when SpongeBob had to erase him, calling it another slightly spooky moment. Paul Tibbett, a producer on the show, actually provides the voice for this character, nicknamed ‘Frankendoodle’.
Although the Frankendoodle is a scary villain, he’s not the only one SpongeBob and the Krusty Krab have dealt with. Plankton, who runs the Chum Bucket and constantly tries to steal the Krabby Patty formula, is really the show’s main villain. In the recent movie, The SpongeBob Movie: Search for SquarePants, the Flying Dutchman caused trouble for Bikini Bottom. Other villains like Nosferatu, the Dirty Bubble, and Man Ray add to the show’s memorable cast of characters.
Although DoodleBob hasn’t caused trouble in Bikini Bottom lately, there’s a chance he could come back. Nickelodeon has renewed the show for another season—season seventeen—which opens the door for his return. As SpongeBob continues with new spin-offs and movies, it’s exciting to think about where we might see classic villains like him appear next.
