At the very beginning, God created the sky and the earth. Then God spoke, and light came into existence.
Then God made television, and God saw that it was good.
These days, simply having content isn’t enough to attract viewers. The old way of watching TV – turning on a channel at a set time – is fading fast. More and more people are ditching traditional cable and broadcast TV for streaming services, online apps, and watching content digitally.
Please don’t attempt to cut cables yourself! You could accidentally disconnect something important, like your power or internet.
It’s funny, but the newest TV options are beginning to resemble traditional television. These platforms are becoming centralized places with channels that run constantly and are funded by advertisements. Services like Pluto TV, the Roku Channel, Plex, and Tubi are all free to use, and you don’t even need to sign up to start watching.
Many channels on these streaming platforms feature well-known shows that people who grew up watching cable TV will instantly recognize. Now, some of these shows have built up so much content over the years that they can even have their own dedicated channels – often called “FAST” channels, which stands for “free ad-supported streaming television.”
These single-channel streaming services are becoming increasingly popular, and new ones appear constantly. To give you an idea, here are 25 examples to help you explore this growing world of FAST (Free Ad-Supported Television). Watching everything available would be a massive undertaking!
Just so you know, most of the shows listed below are also available to stream on demand through the services mentioned.

TV Shows We Used to Love That Are Cringe Now

The West Wing (1999-2006)
When people discuss classic TV shows that haven’t aged well, The West Wing often comes up. It’s not that the show was bad—the storylines weren’t terrible, and the acting was generally good. The problem is that The West Wing presented an idealized, rather than realistic, view of politics. It portrayed a world of incredibly virtuous leaders who always did the right thing, or faced consequences if they didn’t. That kind of optimism feels out of touch with today’s political climate. The show’s America simply doesn’t reflect how things actually work, and watching it now can feel unsatisfying instead of hopeful. (And let’s not even mention The Newsroom.)

Entourage (2004-2011)
It’s surprising Entourage even got made, let alone lasted as long as it did. The show, about a moderately successful actor and his friends navigating Hollywood, seems simple enough. But considering it aired in the late 2000s—a time of big social and technological changes—it’s a bit of a relic. What was presented as the height of cool masculinity in 2004 now comes across as irritating. To say the show’s portrayal of relationships is outdated is a massive understatement. It’s still mildly entertaining as a look back at how things used to be, but barely.

Supernatural (2005-2020)
Was Supernatural always destined to become unintentionally awkward, or did it stumble into it? The show started as a lighthearted adventure about hunting monsters, complete with a great rock soundtrack and a playful take on religious stories. However, it went on for far too long, lasting about four or five seasons past its prime. Eventually, the constant, world-ending storylines became repetitive, characters died and came back to life with little consequence, and the relationships between the main characters became tiresome. Even in its final episodes, the show struggled to satisfy fans when it finally acknowledged a popular romantic pairing, and many felt the portrayal was still prejudiced. It was quite a journey, though!

The Secret Life of the American Teenager (2008-2013)
Let’s be honest, ABC’s teen drama The Secret Life of the American Teenager was always a bit awkward, but it was surprisingly popular. Despite its title sounding like a scare tactic from a 1970s public service announcement, the show didn’t offer much in the way of fresh perspectives. Instead, it turned out to be a pretty standard high school story with a rather traditional take on teen pregnancy—the message was essentially to keep the baby, find a partner, and build a family. The writing is notoriously bad; a quick online search for “secret life cringe” reveals plenty of examples, including one particularly awful scene.

Glee (2009-2015)
Okay, so Glee was one of those shows I just couldn’t look away from, even though it often made me cringe so hard. It walked this really weird line between being truly awful and being so bad it was entertaining – like a train wreck, honestly. It felt like creator Ryan Murphy just wanted to see how far he could push things, and that became his signature style. Unlike Secret Life, which was way too cautious with its take on teenage life, Glee went completely over the top. The plots got wilder and more unbelievable with each episode. The characters were strangely one-dimensional yet also had way too much going on at the same time. And honestly, the covers and mashups of popular songs? They were just… grating. We’d seriously choose to watch almost anything else. A school teacher leading a rendition of “Blurred Lines” is just one example of the show’s many questionable choices.

Sherlock (2010-2017)
Sherlock experienced a dramatic shift in popularity, going from a widely loved show to one many viewers stopped enjoying. It initially captivated audiences with its fresh take on classic stories and launched Benedict Cumberbatch to international fame. However, with only a few long episodes released infrequently, the series seemed to lose its way. Many early fans found that by the time later seasons arrived, their interest had waned, and the show’s once-brilliant creativity had faded – most remember noticing a clear decline in quality, particularly with the overuse of the ‘mind palace’ concept.

Game of Thrones (2011-2019)
Like many shows, Game of Thrones went from being widely loved to disliked as it went on. While it was initially fantastic, the quality noticeably declined. The show always asked a lot of viewers – keeping track of fictional places and characters, and following complex storylines – which became tiring, especially as it approached the finale and started unexpectedly killing off popular characters. Now, if someone says they’re a fan, they usually add that they only enjoyed the first few seasons, just to avoid an argument!

House of Cards (2013-2018)
It’s tempting to dismiss House of Cards now that its former star is facing scandal, but the show wasn’t particularly strong even before. As one of Netflix’s earliest original hits, it was promoted as a smart, intense political drama – like The West Wing, but with a darker edge. It followed a ruthless congressman and his wife as they climbed the political ladder through manipulation and even murder. While the show’s direct address to the audience was initially innovative, the constant twists and cliffhangers in each season eventually became predictable. Ultimately, most viewers stopped watching, especially as the show struggled to deal with the controversy surrounding its lead actor.

Orange Is the New Black (2013-2019)
Like House of Cards, interest in Orange Is the New Black started to decline well before its finale. The show began strongly as a unique prison drama with a diverse cast and compelling storylines that seemed to promise many exciting seasons. However, a major flaw emerged: the show consistently focused on the least engaging character. This became particularly clear with the main character, who even dedicated fans found boring, yet consistently received the most screen time. After a few seasons of this, viewers began to question why they were still watching, and the show now serves as a cautionary tale for how to handle future seasons of a hit series.

The Mandalorian (2019-2023)
The success of The Mandalorian may have ironically damaged the reputation of the Volume—the innovative video wall soundstage that allowed for real-time effects and seamless background movement. While the first season offered a promising, stylish Star Wars adventure reminiscent of a Western, later seasons lost focus. Instead of building on that initial concept, the show overloaded itself with unnecessary backstory and suffered from poor visual effects and uninspired scenery, failing to live up to the potential of its groundbreaking technology. By the final season, viewership had dropped significantly, marking a disappointing end for what began as a brilliant idea.
