Batman Beyond was a hugely popular TV show that introduced a new generation to the world of Batman and comic books. It took place in the future, featuring Terry McGinnis as the new Batman after Bruce Wayne’s retirement, and successfully updated the character’s story. Its futuristic style and updated Batsuit were instant hits with fans. Though the show ended years ago, its dedicated fanbase is finally getting what they’ve wanted: a comic book that perfectly captures the show’s unique feel.
The new comic, Batman/Static: Beyond, perfectly captures the feel of the classic cartoons. It follows Terry McGinnis as he juggles being Batman with his schoolwork, and features Static as a father and partner. Just like in the original DCAU shows, Batman and Static make a great team, and this comic continues that success. They join forces to battle a new villain connected to both of their pasts, and the story reads just like a classic episode from either Batman Beyond or Static Shock.
The Price of Clean Power

The first issue focuses on setting the stage for the story to come, introducing the key players and background information. It begins with the Justice League test-driving a new spaceship built by Static and Bruce Wayne. If the test flight went well, it would allow Earth to become part of the Cooperative, a group of planets that could greatly advance Earth’s technology. After successfully defending the ship from Khund pirates, the test was deemed a success and the team returned home. Meanwhile, Static resumed his life as Virgil Hawkins just as Gotham City was preparing to launch the Q-Grid, a revolutionary clean energy system he designed.
In Gotham City, Terry intervened when a student named Melvin was being attacked by a bully. Melvin was protesting the Q-Grid, a new power source, believing that technology already controlled too much of people’s lives – a feeling worsened by his busy parents who barely had time for him. Terry gave Melvin his contact information, offering help if needed, and Melvin soon had to reach out. During the Q-Grid’s unveiling, the Jokerz attacked. Although Batman stopped the group, a stray rocket hit the plant, causing it to explode. Melvin was caught inside, desperately calling Terry, and was struck by the resulting energy blast. The story concludes with Melvin falling into the water, seemingly gaining powers from the explosion.
An Incredible Adaptation

This comic gets right to the point, establishing its story very quickly. The overall feel and speed of this issue are remarkably similar to the opening minutes of a Batman Beyond episode, though with some changes made for the comic book format. It’s structured almost exactly like a crossover between the two would play out. We see a team-up at the beginning that could be important later, a device that links the characters, and a new friend of Terry’s who becomes a villain due to a difficult family situation. It’s a familiar setup, one that Batman Beyond used frequently, and it’s recreated almost perfectly in this comic.
Because this is a comic book, not an animated cartoon, it’s structured differently. It includes more detailed explanations, which actually helps build on the quick, energetic feel of the original shows. If you read it like a typical comic, it might seem a bit hurried, but it flows perfectly as a continuation of the series. Like the cartoons, which had to introduce characters and tell stories in just twenty-two minutes, Melvin’s backstory feels similar to those of Willie Watt and Ten. It’s easy to imagine him holding Terry responsible for his situation, and Terry feeling guilty for not keeping his promise to be there for him.
This issue is a fantastic treat for fans of both Batman Beyond and Static Shock, offering a nostalgic and exciting experience. The story moves quickly, and the artwork and action are excellent, leaving me eager to find out what happens next.
