While most fans remember Qui-Gon Jinn’s death in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, it wasn’t actually his first. Many believe Qui-Gon’s story is a sad one, and that he could have guided Anakin Skywalker to a better fate, potentially preventing Anakin’s turn to the dark side. However, George Lucas revealed in a 1999 interview with Cut Magazine that he never intended for Anakin to become a Jedi in the first place.
In a surprising turn of events, Star Wars has revealed that Qui-Gon Jinn, the Jedi Master best known for his death, actually experienced a near-fatal incident previously. The current storyline in Star Wars: Jedi Knight #9, by Marc Guggenheim and Madibek Musabekov, follows Qui-Gon’s investigation into an assassin targeting him. The assassin almost succeeded, causing Qui-Gon’s heart to stop, but he was saved by fellow Jedi Masters Mace Windu and Aayla Secura.

Why Didn’t Qui-Gon Jinn Become A Force Ghost Then?

It’s fun to picture Qui-Gon Jinn as a spirit guide, like Buffy the Vampire Slayer – she famously sang about already dying twice! But there’s a real reason Star Wars made this choice. Qui-Gon was the first Jedi in thousands of years to figure out how to become a Force Ghost. In fact, he became more influential after death, teaching Yoda and Obi-Wan the way. This raises an interesting question: why didn’t he learn to become a Force Ghost sooner?
The explanation probably comes from a quiet moment in The Phantom Menace, right before Qui-Gon fights Darth Maul. Becoming a Force Ghost isn’t something that happens by chance; Jedi need to get ready, finding inner peace to keep their mind active as they enter the spiritual world of the Force. Qui-Gon wasn’t prepared in the Jedi Knights comics, meaning he would have faded away completely if Mace and Aayla hadn’t helped him—and the galaxy’s future would have been drastically changed.
The current Jedi Knights comic series feels a bit separate from the main Skywalker story. However, Qui-Gon Jinn’s near-death experience could lead to a new storyline where he searches for the secret to immortality. If that happens, this story will become much more important, and the unusual decision to have Qui-Gon die before The Phantom Menace will finally make sense.
Star Wars: Jedi Knight #9 is on sale now from Marvel Comics.
