This week marks the 27th anniversary of the premiere of what many consider the best Batman animated series. However, the show didn’t have a traditional series finale. The conclusion to the story actually unfolds in a different show, Batman Beyond. As the year 2000 approached, cartoon viewers’ tastes were evolving. While Batman: The Animated Series was hugely successful, it needed a fresh, modern update to appeal to a new generation of fans and keep the franchise exciting.
On January 10, 1999, Batman Beyond premiered on the WB, reimagining the DC hero in a futuristic setting. This version of Batman was a fresh, modern take, featuring a younger hero with updated technology and a new set of villains enabled by the world of tomorrow. However, the series didn’t receive a typical finale. Years later, fans learned that an episode of Justice League Unlimited actually concluded the story.
Batman Beyond Takes Batman Into the Future
Batman Beyond, created by Paul Dini, Bruce Timm, and Alan Burnett, is a continuation of the stories told in Batman: The Animated Series and The New Batman Adventures. Set in the future, the show reveals that Bruce Wayne (voiced by the late Kevin Conroy) continued fighting crime as Batman even as he grew old. Eventually, his aging body forced him to retire and distance himself from his past life. However, he soon meets Terry McGinnis (Will Friedle), who learns that this older man was once the legendary Batman.
I’m a huge fan of Batman Beyond! It’s so cool how Terry McGinnis basically becomes the new Batman, stepping up when Bruce Wayne needs to step back. Bruce doesn’t just disappear though – he becomes Terry’s mentor, helping him navigate a new wave of criminals, some of whom are inspired by old foes. They make a really interesting team, and we got to see their adventures unfold over three seasons and a fantastic movie, Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, which brought back a classic villain in a really clever way!
Though Batman Beyond played a key role in building Warner Bros.’ larger DC animated world, the show never received a definitive series finale. The last episode instead centered around Zeta, a character from the The Zeta Project spin-off, leaving Terry McGinnis’ story unresolved for years. To the surprise of fans, Justice League Unlimited eventually provided an official conclusion to Batman Beyond four years after the original series ended.
How Does Batman Beyond Actually End?

Terry McGinnis, the hero from Batman Beyond, continued to appear in the DC Animated Universe after his series ended. He first reappeared in Static Shock when the hero traveled to the future. Later, Justice League Unlimited explored the future even further in the episode “The Once and Future Thing.” This episode showed Terry again, along with an older Static, a new Justice League team, and other unexpected characters.
The episode “Epilogue” was a fantastic surprise for fans, finally resolving all the remaining mysteries of Batman Beyond. The episode revisits Batman’s animated past and brings everything together for Terry McGinnis. Set years after the main series, an older Terry encounters an aged Amanda Waller and learns a shocking truth: he isn’t a clone of Bruce Wayne, but actually Bruce’s biological son. This was the result of a Cadmus experiment where Bruce’s DNA was injected into Terry’s father, with the goal of creating a new Batman.
It was a huge relief to see Terry finally understand he wasn’t created to be Batman – he became Batman through his own decisions. It felt like everything clicked into place for him. He immediately proposed to Dana, his girlfriend from the original series, and then they moved forward into the future. It was a really satisfying ending, one that needed years to develop after Batman Beyond finished, but it’s easy to see how fans who didn’t follow DC’s other animated shows might have missed it.
