27 Years Ago Today, Cartoon Network’s Longest Running Original Premiered (But You Can’t Stream Its Finale)

Today marks the 27th anniversary of the premiere of one of Cartoon Network’s most hilarious animated series. It’s frustrating that you can’t even find the show’s final episode available to stream now. Cartoon Network was incredibly strong in the years leading up to the 2000s, launching a wave of truly memorable and funny cartoons. One show, in particular, from that era—often called the “Cartoon Cartoons”—remains exceptionally funny almost three decades later.

Today marks the 27th anniversary of the premiere of Ed, Edd n Eddy on Cartoon Network, a show widely considered one of the channel’s funniest. The series enjoyed five successful seasons and even concluded with a TV movie. However, revisiting the show now for a nostalgic trip is surprisingly difficult, as neither the series itself nor its finale movie are currently available on any digital platforms.

Ed Edd n Eddy Premiered on Cartoon Network 27 Years Ago Today

I absolutely loved growing up with Ed, Edd n Eddy on Cartoon Network! It was such a unique show, created by Danny Antonucci, and it all revolved around these three hilarious friends. There was Ed, voiced by Matt Hill, who was super strong and a total sweetheart, always getting into trouble thanks to his little sister Sarah. Then you had Edd, brilliantly voiced by Sam Vincent, a really smart but anxious kid who was always overthinking things. And finally, Eddy, brought to life by Tony Sampson, was the mastermind behind all their crazy schemes to get money from the neighborhood kids. They were such a fun trio!

Ed, Edd n Eddy is set in a suburban cul-de-sac, primarily during the summer months, and follows the misadventures of three boys constantly trying to earn money to buy jawbreakers. Their plans always fail, much to the frustration of everyone else in the neighborhood. The show is a classic slapstick comedy, enhanced by exaggerated sound effects that make the physical gags even funnier. Characters are incredibly flexible and react to impacts in a cartoonishly exaggerated way, much like those seen in Looney Tunes.

Despite all the craziness, Ed, Edd n Eddy really took the time to develop its characters. While each episode was a funny, standalone adventure, you could see changes happening over the seasons. The show also holds the record for the longest-running original series on Cartoon Network, ending ten years after it began with the movie, Ed, Edd n Eddy’s Big Picture Show. That movie delivered on long-running storylines and finally showed us more about the Eds – and even had the other kids accept them! It was a truly satisfying ending for fans.

What Happened to Ed Edd n Eddy?

After being turned down by Nickelodeon, Ed, Edd n Eddy was finally presented to Cartoon Network. A key condition was that the creator, Antonucci, maintain complete artistic control. This is the main reason the show hasn’t been rebooted or continued with new episodes, despite fan interest. Antonucci is firmly against the idea, believing any attempt would be unsuccessful.

Despite not being actively renewed by Cartoon Network, the show is facing the same challenges as other classic series on the channel. While episodes are still available for digital purchase on platforms like Prime Video, they’ve been removed from streaming services like HBO Max and Hulu. Unfortunately, the official series finale is completely unavailable on these platforms. And, Ed, Edd n Eddy’s Big Picture Show isn’t available to stream or buy digitally, meaning fans can’t access that final, satisfying conclusion to the series.

The show ran on Cartoon Network for over a decade, spawning multiple seasons, video games, a movie, and various specials. Despite its success and humor, the original creators haven’t revisited the series finale, leaving it as it is. This is unfortunate, but also shows how much the show means to its dedicated fanbase.
