It’s been a challenging journey so far. And if you talk to anyone who’s seen the film, be prepared for a long conversation – they have a lot of good things to say about it!
Despite receiving positive reviews and being well-received by audiences, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple didn’t do well at the box office when it came out on January 16, 2026.
It’s puzzling when a movie receives overwhelmingly positive reviews (92% from critics) and is clearly popular with audiences (88% ‘Verified Hot’ on Rotten Tomatoes), yet fails to attract moviegoers. Now, this lack of success in theaters is also impacting its performance online.
After a limited release in theaters, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple quickly became available to rent or buy digitally. It initially performed well on Apple TV, suggesting it could overcome its disappointing theatrical run. However, its popularity has since waned, though it remains somewhat popular, having reached No. 3 on Apple TV before falling to No. 5 in the US and No. 4 in Canada.
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple Might Be The Last Hoorah
Despite everything, the popular zombie series is still performing well, currently ranking among the top five most-streamed shows on Apple TV.
Cillian Murphy is currently getting ready for the release of Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, the latest installment in the Peaky Blinders franchise. There were rumors he would appear in 28 Years Later, coming out in 2025, but that didn’t happen. Now it’s clear why – he was waiting for the right moment to return in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.
Despite the return of Danny Boyle, the new film didn’t perform well in theaters, bringing in only $57.6 million globally with a production cost of $63 million. It was released for digital rental just 32 days after hitting cinemas. While 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple wasn’t a commercial success, it was generally well-received by critics and viewers – though those who enjoyed it struggled to get others to see it.
It’s understandable why Sony is hesitant to announce another sequel right now. While everyone loves the quality of the game, that doesn’t automatically mean it’s profitable for the studio. If this is the final release, at least those who missed it will soon be able to experience it on Peacock.
