The highly anticipated sequel, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, will be available on Netflix earlier than expected. Released in theaters on January 16, 2026, the film was directed by Nia DaCosta, taking over from the original director Danny Boyle. The cast includes Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell, Alfie Williams, Erin Kellyman, Chi Lewis Perry, Emma Larid, and Sam Locke, and continues the story of the post-apocalyptic zombie outbreak that began with the 2003 film 28 Days Later.
According to What’s On Netflix, the movie 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple will start streaming on Netflix on March 31, 2026. It will be available online 74 days after it first appeared in theaters. You can already rent or buy the movie digitally, and it will be released on DVD and Blu-ray on April 21, 2026.
The Netflix release for 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple will happen much sooner after its theatrical debut than the original 28 Years Later. The first movie came out in theaters on June 20, 2025, and wasn’t available on Netflix until 92 days later. The Bone Temple marks the beginning of a new agreement between Sony Pictures and Netflix, ensuring that all new Sony films will stream on Netflix first for the next several years, through 2029.

Sony Pictures Releasing
Even though critics loved 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple – giving it a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – it didn’t perform as well at the box office as the first movie. It earned $14 million over the Martin Luther King Jr. weekend, which was less than half of the $30 million the original 28 Years Later made when it was released in June 2025. Overall, the new movie has earned significantly less than its predecessor; the first film brought in $151 million worldwide, while 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple has currently earned $57 million globally.
The recent poor performance of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple at the box office has created uncertainty about the future of the planned third film in the 28 Years Later series. When Sony Pictures obtained the rights to the 28 Days Later franchise, director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland envisioned a trilogy. 28 Years Later and The Bone Temple were filmed back-to-back, with director Michel DaCosta brought on board to expedite the sequel’s release. Confirmation of the third film came shortly before The Bone Temple premiered in theaters.

The next movie in the series will likely feature Cillian Murphy’s character, Jim, more prominently, after a brief appearance at the end of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. Fans are hoping The Bone Temple performs well on Netflix, potentially attracting viewers who weren’t impressed with 28 Years Later. It would be unfortunate if the film’s success was hampered, as happened with the previous sequel, preventing another planned movie from being made.
