Look, Event Horizon wasn’t exactly hailed as a masterpiece when it came out in 1997. It got mixed reviews and didn’t make a huge splash at the box office. But over the years, it’s really stuck with people – and I say that as a devoted fan! It’s become a true cult classic, the kind that builds a legendary following. What really sets it apart is how it blends Lovecraftian horror with genuinely disturbing psychological trauma. Honestly, Paul W.S. Anderson created one of the most viscerally scary and gory films of the ’90s – maybe of all time. And now, nearly 30 years later, that terrifying story is about to get even bigger.
What makes the film Event Horizon so beloved, like all great cult classics, is the mystery of what we didn’t see. The infamous “blood orgy” scene was heavily cut after a terrible test screening, and much of it was lost forever. Only brief glimpses made it into the final movie, with some footage later appearing in a documentary. For almost thirty years, the full scene has lived on as a legend among fans. But now, the Event Horizon prequel comic series, particularly Issue #4 (which I had the chance to read early thanks to IDW), finally shows us the complete scene – and it’s everything fans hoped for.
Event Horizon’s Prequel Finally Goes Where the Studio Wouldn’t

The comic book series Event Horizon: Dark Descent, published by IDW, has been carefully revealing the story leading up to the terrifying events of the original film, showing how the ship vanished and its crew fell apart. The first two issues were a promising beginning, capturing the same unsettling and intense horror that made the movie so captivating. This prequel series is quickly becoming a must-read for fans, expanding the story’s background and paying homage to the original. And issue #4 promises to deliver something longtime fans have been eagerly anticipating: the return of the infamous blood orgy.
After reading it, I can confidently say it lives up to all the praise it’s received over the years. It doesn’t just show what the movie couldn’t; it cleverly uses the unique strengths of comics to create a truly unsettling experience. It’s as visually intense and suggestive as it needs to be, showing enough to shock, but leaving gaps for your imagination to fill in the details. It’s similar to the original film’s use of disturbing imagery, but expanded, more explicit, and even more impactful.
As a horror fan, I’ve always been fascinated by the original cut of Event Horizon. Apparently, it had this incredibly disturbing sequence – a full-blown depiction of hell, showing exactly what horrors the ship witnessed on the other side. It was seriously intense – think ripped bodies, flayed skin, and just pure, chaotic violence, even a breakdown of people’s minds. But when test audiences saw it, they were completely freaked out, and the studio freaked out even more! They ended up cutting it, which is a shame because it really would have explained what happened to Captain Kilpack. We always knew something terrible happened to him and his crew, he even warned us, but the full extent of it was left to our imaginations.
Dark Descent Fills In Event Horizon’s Background Grimly

The third issue shifts focus from Kilpatrick to Doctor Peter Adjei, continuing the series’ pattern of exploring different crew members’ backstories – including a return appearance by Sam Neil as Dr. William Weir. The story weaves together the traumas of the crew with the tragic destiny of the ship and a demonic conspiracy that predates the original film. Issue 3 vividly portrays Adjei’s personal struggles, solidifying the creative team – Christian Ward, Tristan Jones, Pip Martin, and Alex Ray – as a powerful force in the series.
Okay, so Issue 3 introduced the big bad, Paimon, coming through Weir’s invention, but Issue 4… wow. It really delivers on the intensity. It’s a tough read, honestly, dealing with Kilpatrick’s past and all the horror building up, but it’s incredibly powerful. It’s not just gore for the sake of it, though. As someone who’s loved Event Horizon for years, I was really hoping this series would capture that same feeling, and I’m thrilled to say Dark Descent absolutely does. It honors the original vision perfectly, and it’s a dark, amazing experience.
The third issue of Event Horizon: Dark Descent will be released on November 12th, and the fourth issue will follow on December 24, 2025. Pre-orders close on November 10th, so be sure to order before then – it’s going to be great!
